We are starting our last Unit 14: Measurement & Conversions. We will be learning both customary and metric units of length, capacity, and weight. We will be learning how to convert between different customary and metric units.

The students are also starting a project making a math picture book that incorporates a mathematical concept they learned this year along with their writing skills. The students are coming up with creative story lines to incorporate key math concepts we have learned this year.

Social Studies/Science

We will be starting our Caine's Arcade project. We will be incorporating math, science, and engineering into their projects. We will be reviewing everything we have learned in science to brainstorm what concept they want to use in their project. We will also review important math concepts and the student will create a logo for their project that goes with their company's name. We will be using the engineering design process to build their arcade games. Thank you so much for all the cardboard being brought in.

- LOTS of Cardboard Boxes (all sizes)

- Packing Tape (thicker the better)

- Paint (all colors)

In celebration of the hard work the students have done working on poetry, on May 8 we are going to have a poetry cafe in our classroom involving light refreshments (cookies and lemonade/coffee) while the students read aloud their favorite poems in a cafe atmosphere. Please let me know if you are interested in bringing in one of the following: store bought cookies (chocolate chip, sugar, oatmeal raisin - PEANUT FREE), muffins, lemonade, K cups of coffee and/or tea. Please bring in all items by May 7th!

We are starting Book Pals. Each student has chosen a partner after discussing qualities that make up GREAT partners. Then with their partner they previewed and read a page out of books that interested them. Last Friday, the students chose a book from the ones they previewed. This week the students will be setting up designated chapters/pages to read each day. The students will choose how they want to respond each day to be prepared for their book club conversations. Students may need to complete this for homework. I expect 3-5 complete sentences per response.

My mini-lesson's will be focused on main idea and details to help summarize a text. The students will be summarizing their chapters each day and illustrating it, in order to make a smaller picture book version of their book club novels to then share with their book buddies in Miss Mitchell's Kindergarten class.
