Good vs Evil
By: Justin Luu
Definition of Evil:
To me evil means many things i means wicked, bad, wrong, foul, sinful, corrupt, dishonorable and etc... My definition of evil relates to all 3 of Shirley Jackson's stories. Because all of them resealable evil The Lottery had someone get stoned to death. In What a thought a man probably died from a ashtray to the head. And in the Possibility of Evil a woman made the town upset and in return they burned her roses.
''The Lottery''
In this first story the entire village goes and does a tradition that they do every year, they are excited for the lottery until things take a huge turn. This relates a lot to Shirley Jackson's style of writing, she puts a sudden twist to the story to keep the reader on the edge of their seats.
''What a Thought''
The story, ''What a thought'' relates a lot to Shirley Jackson's style of writing. In this story a woman by the name of Margaret goes through many thoughts of ways to kill her husband. In the her mind she says to herself that she doesn't want to kill him but in the end she ends up smashing an ashtray at the back of her husband's head. And as we all know the woman in the story (Margaret) has a mental disability, just like Shirley Jackson. This story is showing us that you have to think wisely before you act.
''The Possibility of Evil''
In this story a woman named Miss Adela StrangeWorth thought to herself that she was better then everyone and she just thought that she was on a completely higher level then anyone, she also saw a lot of evil happening in the town. She decided to send letters to everyone in the town and tell them about what their children are doing. This relates to Jackson's writing a lot. The theme of this is if you do something rude to someone then the same will happen to you.
