ROISD trained all teachers that teach math on a program called Number Talks. Number Talks are a 5-15 minute classroom conversation around purposely crafted computation problems that are solved mentally. The goals of a number talk are accuracy, flexibility, and efficiency.
Principles and Standards for School Mathematics states, “Computational fluency refers to having efficient and accurate methods for computing. Students exhibit computational fluency when they demonstrate flexibility in the computational methods they choose, understand and can explain these methods, and produce accurate answers efficiently.” It reminds us that a student cannot be fluent without conceptual understanding and flexible thinking. (https://www.nctm.org/News-and-Calendar/Messages-from-the-President/Archive/Linda-M_-Gojak/Fluency_-Simply-Fast-and-Accurate_-I-Think-Not!/)
When working with students, we must focus on efficiency rather than speed. We need to make sure that our students can use strategic thinking when working out a computation. The goal is not always the right answer, but understanding the meaning of an operation, recording their work carefully and asking their selves if their solution is reasonable.
Talking about math is very important. You can really see how a child thinks and how they solved a problem. Ask your child about Number Talks and some of the strategies they use to solve problems mentally. It is amazing what our kids can do!
Some of the strategies we teach are:
Addition:
Doubles
Near Doubles
Add up in chunks
Place Value

Make Friendly numbers
Make a Ten
