Pumpkins... Part 2
The pumpkin challenge was a HUGE success! After reading 5 Little Pumpkins Sitting on a Fence, the students were asked to build a fence out of recycled material (thanks for all the donations). It had to be at least 2 inches high and hold 5 little pumpkins. At least 5 materials needed to be attached to the fence. This activity promoted working together and how important it is to have a say in the design of the project as a group. It was a wonderful learning experience for all of us!
Pumpkin Adjectives
Each table had a small pumpkin to examine. Then, they took out sticky notes and wrote a word on each post it that described the pumpkin at their table. We had an orange pumpkin, a warty pumpkin, a dirty pumpkin and a bumpy pumpkin. We then took these words and made them into a poem.
Pumpkin seeds
Mrs. Sayre let the children touch the slimy, gooey, stringy inside of the pumpkin that we were carving in the art room.
Retelling events
We convinced Mrs. Sayre to carve a pumpkin so that we would be able to retell the events in order. She uploaded pictures that we took and had the children use the SeeSaw app and record their voice telling the steps we took to carve the pumpkin for first grade. Please check it out!
We did do other things besides pumpkins...
Phonics
We are now using our magnetic letters and boards to make new words. I tap out a word, then the students tap it out and build it and write it.
Subtraction bowling
One of the students asked if we were going to have math...I smiled and said, "this is Math!" They were having so much fun subtracting the cups that fell down from 10 that they didn't realize they were doing subtraction problems.!
Keyboard
We started a new program to help the students learn the keyboard instead of hunting and pecking around on the keyboard. We learned about the home row and how are hands should be placed and that our thumb should be what presses the space bar. The program is called Typing Club which is a Google App. We will be working on this at least once a week.

Top Dog
Evelyn was our Top Dog. She loves hot dogs (Yum!) and is pawsome at painting and swimming. She wants to be a police officer when she grows up!
Doggy Bag
1. There are bright orange and pink flashcards in your child's Friday folder. Please cut them and add them to the rings in your child's dog binder. Thanks so much!
2. Keep practicing tying those shoes.
