Principal's Corner
A note from Ms. Flaugher
Happy New Year!
I hope that each of you had a wonderful holiday season. While I enjoyed the time to unplug and relax (yes, some binge tv viewing might have occurred), it’s great to be back!
We are excited to welcome back our first semester hybrid students beginning on Tuesday, January 12. We continue to follow all COVID safety protocols, so be sure to have your appropriate face mask with you when returning to school. With the move back to the hybrid model, we strongly encourage our virtual students to take advantage of the Zooms that our teachers are offering. Remember that the last day of first semester classes is Friday, January 15th.
Second semester classes begin on Tuesday, January 19. If you made a request to change your Preferred Learning Model for the remainder of the year, we will be notifying you of that status by the end of the day on Tuesday, January 12. More information will follow soon.
Families, you are reminded to check your email for bi-monthly communications from teachers via Infinite Campus. We call it “Push Out Monday.” The goal is to “push out” missing assignments to students and their families every other Monday. Our first one of the new year was this past Monday, January 4. Please reach out to individual teachers if you did not receive this communication.
Seniors, this message is for you. While we don’t have specific plans finalized for your graduation ceremony quite yet, we certainly know the date- Sunday, May 30th. Keep that in mind as you are pushing through to the end! This is my first year as principal and I’m looking forward to standing with you and seeing ALL OF YOU get that diploma!
Again, welcome to the New Year!!
Academics
Chorus
Only 130 senior vocalists from across the Commonwealth of Virginia were selected for this honor, and we are so proud of both of you. The rehearsals and event will be held virtually this year, and the event will premiere in March for the National Association for Music Education's "Music in Our Schools Month". Again, congratulations!!
ART

Pick-up will be done outside of the building and faculty and staff will be available to assist you. We ask that you stay in your car, drive up to the entrance, and be sure to wear a facemask. Please feel free to contact the school if you have any questions at 515-5370. Pick-up times are as follows: Art Kit Pick-up Days/Times for REMOTE students only at ECG Main Entrance. Hybrid students can pick up their packets in class:

Attendance
Regular Attendance
Regular attendance helps our students excel in learning.
Lynchburg City Schools is checking student attendance on a daily basis. We need all of our students, whether they are remote learners or in-person (hybrid) learners, to be involved with school every day.
Parents, guardians, and families, you are essential partners in promoting good school attendance even in this most challenging time. When a student misses one day or one lesson, that means they may have missed something critical to their understanding of the next several days of instruction.
High schools will be checking attendance each day using a daily attendance question. Beginning Monday, November 2, hybrid AND remote-only students will be required to log into their Homeroom Google Classroom each day by 3:00 p.m. and respond to the Daily Attendance Question.
If students do not complete the daily attendance check-in as outlined above, beginning the week of November 2, 2020, families will receive an automated phone call letting them know that their student was marked absent on the previous day. If the student or family believes the recorded absence is in error, please reach out to the school. ! #AttendanceMatters #Hilltoppers #Dare2Lead #TogetherWeKeepClimbing

Remote Learning Tips
Are you and your student struggling with how to structure the remote learning school day? Having trouble navigating Google Classroom? Need some ways to manage your stress?
Luckily, a team of Hilltopper teachers put together a resource to help give students ideas on ways to be successful: setting up a schedule, navigating Google Classroom, stress management, brain breaks, what a virtual learning day could look like, and more! These were created in the hope that one or more of these resources will help you become even more successful this school year (and beyond)! Here is a short, one page resource for students as well as a more detailed set of slides for families.

Nurse News
Nurse News
Any new students or those students returning to the building for the first time this year MUST file health forms with the school nurse. Links to these forms are located the following document:
student forms for parents for 2020.docx. Please take care of this ASAP. If you have questions or concerns, please email our school nurse Ms. Wood at woodjw@lcsedu.net
If your child has a chronic health condition such as asthma, diabetes, a seizure disorder, or a
food allergy requiring an epi-pen the school division requires that the school clinic have a Health
Care Action plan that is signed by a physician and parent. The Action plan can also include
permission for medication.
See attached links for Health care plans that can also be found on the LCS website.
Virginia Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMMP)
If your child does not have one of the above chronic illnesses but requires medication while at
school the clinic must have a Physician/Parent Authorization to Administer Medication form.
This form must be completed and signed by both the parent/guardian AND the physician. While
we highly encourage parents to make every attempt to give their student’s medications at home,
we understand that there are circumstances that will require your student to take their meds at
school. Please consider the following guidelines for medication administration by the
nurse/clinic while your student is in school:
●A parent always has the right to come to the school and administer medication to their student at
any time during school hours. .
●A Physician/Parent Authorization to Administer Medication form must be completed, signed
and dated by both the prescribing physician and the parent. A parent/guardian should turn
in this form with the medication to be given at school.
●No medication (including over the counter medications like Tylenol and Advil) will be given
without a signed authorization form that is complete.
●All medications must be brought to the school by the parent/guardian. Medication must be
signed in by both the parent and the nurse/school designee. Please allow 15 minutes in order to
accomplish this when you come to the school. Medications may not be brought to school by the
student. Prescription medications must be in the original pharmacy bottle containing the
student’s name, medication name, dosage, route, and frequency.
●Over the counter medication must be in a sealed, original container. The nurse can not
accept any opened containers.
●Students are to report to the clinic at the time their medication is to be administered.
●The parent/guardian must bring in more medication when it is needed.
●It is the parent’s responsibility to pick up medication at the end of the year. No
medication will be kept over the summer or until the next school term.

LCS Updates
UPDATE
Dear LCS families,
Happy New Year! We trust you enjoyed your winter break and remained healthy and safe. As we return, we want to provide you with a few updates.
• On December 15th, the Lynchburg City School Board made the decision that, due to possible travel during the holidays and potential spread of COVID-19, LCS would remain in Phase 2 remote-only learning for all LCS students through Friday, January 8, 2021. We continue to monitor and review our city and LCS metrics and have determined that in-person learning will resume the week of January 11th for students who were participating in hybrid learning during the first semester. Cohort A students will continue to attend on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Cohort B students will continue to attend on Thursdays and Fridays. Monday, January 11th will still be a remote-only learning day for all students.
• LCS School Nutrition and Transportation will be delivering meals this Wednesday, January 6th and Friday, January 8th using the same bus routes that had been established prior to the start of hybrid learning. Go to www.lcsedu.net/return-to-learn/meal-service for the meal delivery map. We will also continue to offer meals at our three middle and two high schools with service Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
• Throughout this week, please continue to encourage your children to check in daily and complete assignments via SeeSaw or Google Classroom. If you have any concerns or your child has limited or no access to the internet, please contact your child’s school so they can work with you!
Also, please note this update for families requesting to switch from remote-only to hybrid learning for the second semester. By Tuesday, January 12th (end of the day), individual schools will communicate with families that requested a change from remote-only to hybrid learning in November, letting you know whether or not your request(s) has been accommodated. They will let families know which cohort their child is in and bus route details if applicable. Please refer to the LCS Update for Second Semester (https://www.lcsedu.net/2020/12/17/lcs-update-second-semester) for the information that was shared in December regarding the switch from remote-only to hybrid learning.
