Note from Principal

Dear Parents,

As we build students' capacity to be proactive, beginning with the end in mind, and putting first things first, the key component is good attendance in school. Like you, we care about your children’s education and about their future. Please join us in promoting the Habits of Happy Kids and raising awareness about the importance of attendance and leadership habits.

Here is why attendance is so important for success:

  • Students who miss school at an early age are more likely to struggle academically and, in later years, to drop out entirely

  • Attendance is the No. 1 predictor of dropout and graduation rates

  • Attendance and GPA are the biggest indicators and influences of college and career readiness

  • More than half of future dropouts can be predicted by sixth grade, based on attendance and failure in English and Math

  • Students who miss 10 or more days of school are 20 percent less likely to graduate from high school

  • Students who miss 10 or more days of school are 25 percent less likely to enroll in college

  • All students must meet 90% daily attendance to be eligible for promotion to the next grade

Doors open at 7:10 AM. Students report to class at 7:25 AM each morning. Students have plenty of time to eat breakfast and get settled in class by the time school begins at 7:45 AM. In addition, Homework Help is available to all students at Whitestone. Homework Help is open Monday-Friday at 7:25 AM in the science lab. Students may come to Homework Help for the following reasons:

  • to get help with work they don't understand

  • to complete unfinished classwork or homework

  • to read independently and have someone sign their reading log

Please join us in promoting good attendance habits at an early age. We appreciate your partnership to ensure our students have every opportunity for academic success.

Leader in Me

Whitestone students are learning about Steven Covey's 7 Habits of Happy Kids. September highlight was Habit #1: Be Proactive. I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.

October highlight will be Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind. I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my classroom and contribute to my school's mission and vision, and look for ways to be a good citizen. (Covey, S., The Leader in Me, pg. 21)

Join us in this learning and ask your students about the habits and how they can continue the habits at home!
