NRWHS April 2018 Newsletter
Mission: To prepare each student for a successful future
Making the Final Turn
You wouldn’t know it judging from the weather this past month, but next week (April 9-13) is the final week of the third quarter. Students will be taking the final round of interim assessments (30-week assessments) next week, and after that, we will adopt a laser-like focus on the Regents and final exams that will be administered in June.
You can expect third quarter report cards to be mailed home during the week of April 16. We encourage you to review your child’s report card and interim assessment results with him/her and to stress the importance of taking advantage of our varied opportunities for additional support:
- Teachers are available from 2:25-2:55 for additional support on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
- There are opportunities available for additional support through the LIFT program (3-5 pm) on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays; the schedule of opportunities changes each week.
- Students are enrolled in Extensions and course-based study halls during period 3 for additional, targeted support.
- Some students are enrolled in Math Lab, ELA Lab, and/or study hall.
Encourage your child to set goals for the June exams, to identify action steps to achieve those goals, and to persevere in the pursuit of those goals.
Please also feel free to reach out to teachers via phone (315-594-3100) or email for more information about your child’s progress. You can also access the SchoolTool Parent Portal for access to your child’s grades, discipline reports, attendance records, and more.
We are committed to supporting your child by preparing him/her for a successful future. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns, and thank you for continuing to serve as a partner in education.

Grade Level Data Assemblies Held
We recently held another round of grade level assemblies to discuss how each grade level is doing with attendance, behavior, and coursework. Click here to view a portion of the assembly presentation. We continue to set aspirational goals and persevere in our pursuit of them!
Students Attend Youth Leadership Forum
On March 21st, 19 NR-W students from grades 9-12 went to the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES Conference Center in Newark to participate in the Wayne County Youth Leadership Forum. Throughout the day, the students worked with teenagers from a variety of other schools in the county on the topic of trust. Our students were able to come up with many different ideas on how to build trust at home and in school, and they plan to present their findings to the rest of the NR-W High School student body in the near future.
Students Attend National College Fair
On March 19, students attended the National College Fair in Rochester. Way to work toward your future story!

What Are The Students Learning?
Algebra 1
Algebra students are about to begin their last unit of new material – statistics! Students learned about many topics this year including polynomials, functions, equations, inequalities, quadratics, exponentials, transformations, and finally statistics. Students gained a lot of new skills in each area, some of their favorites include the box method for factoring and the quadratic formula for finding solutions to quadratic equations. As students finish up their last unit, they will begin reviewing for their Regents exam, which will take place in June. If your child would like extra help preparing for the Regents exam, please encourage them to stay after during activity period, stay after from 3-5, or check out the YouTube channel MissWAlgebra to help them study at home!
AP Calculus
AP Calculus students are gearing up for the AP Calculus exam on May 15th. Students are hard at work putting all their knowledge together and deciphering when to apply different skills. This is the hardest part of the year, as students have a large toolbox of Calculus skills and need to decide when to use each tool. Each student is showing grit, curiosity, and a desire to succeed. Recently, students made huge improvements in determining when they have functions, first derivatives, or second derivatives in a word problem, and whether they need to integrate or derive to answer the given question.
Kids Night Out Held
The NRW High School National Honor Society had a terrific time playing with the elementary students at our Kid’s Night Out event on Friday, March 23rd. We hosted 80 children. Children played various games in the gym, went swimming, and participated in an Easer Egg Hunt. We want to thank the children for coming and having fun with us. Proceeds raised by this event will be donated back to our community.
Blood Drive to Be Held April 19
Donating blood is a simple thing to do, but can make a big difference in the lives of others. Your gift of blood may help up to three people. Every 2 seconds, someone in the United States needs blood.
National Honor Society will be hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, April 19th from 8 am to 4 pm. The blood drive is open to students 16 and older and to all community members. Please enter the building at the front doors and the drive will be in the HS Auditorium. Please be sure to bring an identification card (ex: driver's license).
Blood and Platelet Donors Must:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Be in good general health
- Weigh at least 110 lbs. Additional weight requirements apply for donors 18-years-old and younger and all high school donors.
The donation process from the time you arrive until the time you leave takes about an hour.
The steps in the process are:
- Registration: You will complete donor registration which includes information such as your name, address, phone number, and donor identification number (if you have one).
- Proof of identity: You will be asked to show a donor card, driver’s license or two other forms of ID.
- Health History and Mini Physical: You will answer some questions during a private and confidential interview about your health history and the places you have traveled. You will have your temperature, hemoglobin, blood pressure and pulse checked.
- Donation: Your blood donation itself will take about 8-10 minutes. When approximately a pint of blood has been collected, the donation is complete and a staff person will place a bandage on your arm.
- Refreshments: You will spend a few minutes enjoying refreshments to allow your body time to adjust to the slight decrease in fluid volume. After 10-15 minutes you can then leave the donation site and continue with your normal daily activities. Enjoy the feeling of accomplishment knowing that you have helped to save lives.
In addition to donating blood and hopefully helping to save lives, you can also help NRW students who donate blood to receive a small scholarship from the Red Cross. Our goal is to collect enough pints of blood to earn a $250 scholarship for an NRW student! Please help us to achieve our goal of 35 to 70 pints. Thank you!
