Hopeful Happenings
Kids at Hope at Christensen
I am a Kid at Hope! I am talented, smart, and capable of success. I have dreams for the future, and I will climb to reach those goals and dreams every day.
All kids are capable of success, NO EXCEPTIONS!
Kids at Hope Just Want to Have Fun!
Last month, our Hope Focus was one of the four time travel destinations: Hobbies and Recreation. The slideshow below celebrates the different ways our students and staff have fun. Thanks to the Kids at Hope and Treasure Hunters who shared pictures! Enjoy!

Hope Focus: "We Time Travel"
The last Hope Focus of the year is the last of the three universal truths: We Time Travel.
When I was young, I often accompanied my mom to the grocery store. Every time, I found my way to the greeting cards and stationery. Walking slowly up and down the aisle, I picked out cards that caught my eye for different reasons--their bright colors, fancy fonts, drawings of cute animals, or maybe familiar cartoon characters. Reading their messages, I appreciated the clever rhymes and sweet sentiments that shared deep feelings of affection. I was amazed at what could be said with just a few well-chosen words. I loved writing notes or sending cards to people I cared about, and I loved getting them in return. To this day, cards are still my favorite gift to receive on my birthday.
I loved cards and stationery so much that I imagined, one day, having my own card shop. I didn't work out the details but remember drawing a picture of how it would look from the outside. I wish I still had the drawing as my memory is very faint, but I do recall my name spelled out across the front of the shop with lots of swirls and curls on the ends of each letter. Without knowing the name for it, I engaged in a simple but important skill of Kids at Hope: time travel.
We think of the future all the time in many simple ways--what we’re having for dinner, our plans for the weekend, where we’ll take a vacation, etc. Life is more bearable when we have things to look forward to, giving us motivation to get through the not-so-fun stuff. This is true for looking far ahead in our lives as well. Kids at Hope asserts that children are successful when they can articulate their future, and this is taught through mental time travel.
Mental time travel is the ability to envision a future for yourself. By doing so, you empower yourself to set goals and make choices along the way, starting now, that will help you achieve the success you want and deserve. Now, success is not just one place, one destination, one particular accomplishment. When you mentally time travel, you consider many areas of your life in the future. Specifically, you time travel to four major life destinations: Home and Family, Education and Career, Hobbies and Recreation, and Community and Service.
Over the last few weeks of school, use the file attached below to help your child "map out" their future. These questions might help:
- What does success mean to you?
- What kind of family do you want when you become an adult? Single? Married? Kids or no kids? Pets?
- Where do you want to live? What will your home look like?
- What year will you graduate from high school? Do you want to go to college, a trade school, or somewhere else? How would you like to earn a living and how will you make it happen?
- What's an activity you'd like to learn just for fun? What inspires your creativity, self-expression, or brings peace and contentment to your life?
- What can you do to help others? How will you give back?
- How has someone helped you in a way that you really appreciated?
Your child can write or draw pictures on their maps. After it's completed, help your child find somewhere to post it where they can see it every day. Then, say the Kids at Hope Pledge with your student!
An important thing to remember about your future is that, while you write it, it is not written in stone. It's okay if your vision changes in one, some, or all destinations. What's important is that you keep your sights on what's ahead, always hoping, always dreaming, always working towards your own success. Your future can be whatever you want it to be!
