Duryea Dolphin Newsletter
October 2020 News
Dear Duryea Families,
Greetings Duryea Families!
I hope you are all doing well! Thank you for a great start to the school year! Our students receiving Face to Face instruction are doing a fantastic job following the Duryea safety guidelines. Students are wearing their face masks, washing and sanitizing their hands frequently, and are social distancing in classrooms and around the building. All in an effort to keep us healthy and safe at school. We are also proud of our CFISD Connect students! Students are online each day, engaged, and are learning with their teacher and classmates. CFISD Connect parents, we appreciate you as well for all of your efforts as well.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at (281) 856-5174.
Sincerely,
Tomicka Williams

Story Book Character Day
Dear Parents and Guardians:
If you would like to make a change to the learning option for your child(ren) for the 2nd grading period – from CFISD Connect to On-Campus or from On-Campus to CFISD Connect - the selection window will be open between Monday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Oct. 4. This change will be effective beginning Oct. 19 for middle and high school students and Nov. 9 for elementary students. You will receive a follow-up letter on Monday, Sept. 28 with instructions on how to make the change. If your child is continuing with the same learning option for the 2nd grading period, then no action is required.
Estimados padres y tutores legales:

Material Pick Up For Connect Student
Story Book Character Day October 30th
Students and staff must screen daily (prior to entering a school bus or school) for the following signs and symptoms of COVID-19. See “Health Screening for Students Protocol” and “Health Screening for Staff Protocol”:
Are you experiencing any of the following in a way that is not normal to you?
- Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.00 F
- Loss of taste or smell
- Cough
- Difficulty breathing
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Chills
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Shaking or exaggerated shivering
- Significant muscle pain or ache
- Diarrhea
- Nausea or vomiting
Have you had known close contact with a person who is suspected, presumptive or lab-confirmed with COVID-19 within the last 14 days?
Students and staff must stay home if they answer “yes” to any of the above. See “Students with COVID-19 Symptoms or Confirmed COVID-19 Test Protocol” and "Staff with COVID-19 Symptoms or Confirmed COVID-19 Test Protocol". Students may transition temporarily to the CFISD Connect remote instructional option during this period with the ability to keep up with instruction and meet attendance requirements.
If a parent drops off/picks up a student in the school, the screening questions will be asked of the student’s parent.
Students at school who show symptoms of COVID-19 will be evaluated by the nurse. The nurse will determine whether that child can remain at school.
The clinic will have an isolation area identified for suspected COVID-19 cases and be equipped with air purification systems. In addition, physical barriers, such as partitions, screens, or curtains may be utilized to establish separate areas for sick and well visits.
Areas used by the individual with COVID-19 symptoms will be sanitized as soon as it is feasible.

October Word Of the Month
INTEGRITY
Watch out George Washington and Abe Lincoln! After this month, our school will be filled with children who will go down in history for their inability to tell a lie, because we are dedicating the whole month to the Big Idea of integrity.
INTEGRITY means doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Here are some questions to think about in regards to Integrity.
(1) Think of a time when it was hard to tell the truth but you did anyway. How did that make you feel?
(2) Were you scared to tell the truth because you thought you might get into trouble?
(3) Now think of a time when you told a story, fib, or white lie. What happened as a result of you telling the lie?
INTEGRIDAD
PBIS CORNER
What Is PBIS?
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. PBIS is a set of ideas and tools that schools like Duryea use to improve the behavior of students. PBIS helps us to reinforce the desired behavior from our students, which in turn, helps us to maximize instructional time. We have created a set of expectation for every area of the building. Our acronym, SWIM, helps our students remember the expectations around the building.
What is S.W.I.M?
SWIM is our school acronym that stands for Safety, Wisdom, Integrity, and Motivation. We are encouraging our dolphins to “SWIM” in every area of the building! Encourage your dolphin at home by asking, “How did you SWIM today?”
PBIS REWARDS
Remember Dolphin Dollars? Dolphin Dollars is no more, we have upgraded our student incentive program to PBIS Rewards. When your student follows expectations, they can earn digital points. These points can be redeemed for cool prizes from our school store, or from their teacher’s store. Be sure to ask your Dolphin how many points they earned each day
