THE TIGER TIMES

September 1, 2016

Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year

FROM THE DESK OF YOUR PROUD PRINCIPAL

Tiger families, Thank you for your flexibility and support during the opening month of our school. It is amazing to see the bonds between our students and staff strengthening everyday. We truly are becoming a family! Below is an article that I want to share with all of you. I am a firm believer in raising well-rounded children. Students should be involved in extra-curricular activities that allow their talents and gifts to shine. However, we must all remember to find balance for our children. Please read below and follow the link.

Students who are involved in extracurricular activities, from chess club to cheer-leading, to chorus, tend to have higher self-esteem and stronger connections to school. But an overloaded schedule with too many activities can have the opposite effect, leaving kids and parents stressed out.

This month's Report to Parents, "So Many Activities, So Little Time," offers families strategies to support their child's extracurricular activities while ensuring they're manageable.

ATTENDANCE LINE 803-5105

Attendance Policy

  • When a student is going to be absent from school for any reason, the parent must call the attendance line (803-5105) and report it by 11:00 a.m. Upon returning to school following an absence or absences, the student shall bring a written statement. The note must contain dates of absences and reason, as well as parent/guardian signature. These statements determine if the absence is excusable. Failure to report (verbal or written) a student absent within 24 hours will result in the absence being unexcused. Students will be considered unexcused for all absences other than those stipulated by administrative guidelines, state, or federal statutes. Please see the Acton Website for more information.
  • Just a reminder: School Board policy 5200 regarding appointments. – Parents are encouraged to schedule medical, dental, and other necessary appointments other than during school hours. When appointments are necessary during the school day, the student shall report back to school immediately after the appointment with a signed statement from the doctor, dentist, etc.

School Counseling Program

Greetings! My name is Kevin Adams, and I am your School Counselor here at Acton Elementary. I am here to help ALL students be successful socially, emotionally, and behaviorally so they can reach their academic potential.

Here’s what I do at Acton:

  • Classroom Lessons – I teach classroom guidance lessons to all grades. I focus on social-emotional skills such as feelings, communication, conflict resolution, respect, bucket filling, etc.

  • Small Group Counseling – I work with small groups of students who need extra support in certain areas during lunch bunch groups.

  • Individual Counseling – I meet with students for short-term solution focused sessions to work through problems affecting them at school.

  • School-wide Programs – I work with a team of awesome teachers and staff to develop and run programs throughout the school year. This includes our PBIS PAWS program, morning announcements, TIGER character traits, Tiger of the Month, convocations, Red Ribbon Week, Friendship Week, etc.

  • Consultation with Staff/Parents – I am available to meet/talk with teachers and parents to help support students and provide resources and education about issues affecting children.

You can reach me by phone at 317-803-5103.

Students in grades 3 & 4 will be playing recorders this year. We are trying to raise the money to have a grade level set of recorders here at school. This will allow students to have a recorder assigned to them for their recorder unit, which will cut down on the germ spreading! Help us spread the word about our Donors Choose project!

PE News for September

  • Since the official Olympic Games are over, we will be having our own “Mini Olympics” this month in students’ regularly scheduled PE classes.
  • We will be tested over the following: crabwalk, plank, balances, and soccer dribble and shooting (3rd-5th grade).
  • We will be working on: sit-ups, flamingo balance, proper running technique, and dynamic stretches.
  • 4th and 5th graders have the opportunity to participate in the After School Running Club in preparation for the Miracle Mile Run in October. If interested, please get a permission slip from Mrs. Adams!

FRONT OFFICE INFORMATION

Please review a few important front office policies.

  • We do our best to keep classroom disruptions to a minimum. If your child forgets an item and you bring it in, please do not be offended if the front office asks for you to leave the item with them so it can be delivered at an appropriate time.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm.
  • If electronics (cell phones, ipods, gaming systems) are brought into school and removed from backpacks, they will be confiscated by the teacher. A parent/guardian will be asked to pick up the electronic at the front desk.
  • When having lunch with your student in the cafeteria please remember to only have your child sit with you at the family table. We like to keep the table open for other families.
  • Morning student drop off must be done in the car rider line. Drop off opens at 8:35 am in the car rider line.
  • Students arriving after 8:50 am MUST be signed in at the front office.
  • Review the Franklin Township policies and procedures for absences on p. 2-3 in the student handbook. We appreciate your cooperation.
  • All visitors must have a photo ID to enter the building.
