Keizer Elementary School
MAY 2021
MESSAGE FOR OUR FAMILIES
We want to thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding during this unprecedented year. For the past two months, we have been following our hybrid learning schedule, and we are so proud of how well our students have been following our health and safety protocols when they are at school in-person.
As we move closer to the end of the school year, we would like to ask for your help in reminding students that although they are now receiving some in-person instruction, there is still school work that needs to be done at home. We would love to have all of our students attending their assigned Music and PE classes on their at-home days, as these are graded classes that will show up on their report cards.
We appreciate all of your hard work and dedication!

INFORMATION ABOUT THE EDGE PROGRAM
The deadline to complete registration for a guaranteed spot in the EDGE program for the 2021-22 school year is Friday, May 14.
If you are interested in having your child in the EDGE online program for the 2021-22 school year, you can make that selection during the online registration process, which is now open.
Salem-Keizer Public Schools leaders want to let our community know about the district’s current plan for the 2021-22 school year and some options to consider in determining the best learning option for your family.
Tentative plans for fall 2021
In the fall, SKPS plans to have full-day, in-person classes, five days a week for all students. The district will follow all guidelines from the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Health Authority, which may include protocols such as wearing a face covering, frequent handwashing and some form of physical distancing.
The district will share additional information as plans are finalized throughout the spring and summer.
EDGE online program
We will continue offering our online-only Enhanced Digital Guided Education (EDGE) program. Students who are in EDGE will remain connected to their resident school while receiving online instruction by Salem-Keizer’s EDGE teachers.
Starting in the fall of 2021, EDGE students can choose between two learning pathways to best meet the needs of individual students and their families. One option is called EDGE Connected, which includes daily, teacher-led instruction. The other option is EDGE Independent, which is student-paced with teacher oversight and offers a more flexible schedule.
Deadline to register for guaranteed EDGE spot
The deadline to register for a guaranteed spot in EDGE is Friday, May 14, 2021. Students registered after this date will be enrolled if there is room in the program.
PICTURE DAY AT KEIZER ELEMENTARY
Student pictures will be taken this year! That’s right, May 18th and 19th, Dorian Studios will be here and ready to catch those smiles. Picture orders will be made online only and can be placed by visiting dorianstudio.com and searching for Keizer Elementary School.
You have from now until May 22nd to place your order.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Kindergarten registration for the 2021-22 school year is now open!
Enrolling your child in school early allows our school to prepare for the best possible education. Although the district will not know how school may look next fall, enrolling early, your kindergarten students are sure to thrive with the support of trained educators with in-person and online learning options.
Children who will be 5-years-old on or before September 10, 2021 are eligible to register for free, full-day kindergarten with SKPS. Learn more about how to complete online registration on our district website.
To complete registration, you will need an updated record of your child’s immunizations, proof of residence and your proof of age with you to register.

Did you know?
Behavioral health disorders affect a significant number of America’s school-age children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 13% to 20% of children living in the United States experience a mental disorder in a given year (CDC, 2013).
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescents (Banspach et al., 2016).
The (CDC) 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 17.7% of high-school students had seriously considered attempting suicide in the past twelve months; 14.6% had made plans to do so; and 8.6% had made one or more attempts to do so (Kahn et al., 2016).
By providing supportive environments and teaching kids and teens to recognize their emotions and address them in health ways, we can change lives.
One way to deal with uncomfortable or unpleasant emotions is to remember the word PATH.
PAUSE: do not act on feelings right away.
ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT YOU ARE FEELING: are you mad at someone, or are you sad because your feelings were hurt by what they did? Whatever you are feeling, it is ok to feel that way.
THINK: think about how you can make yourself feel better after you understand your feelings.
HELP: take an action to help yourself based upon what you came up with in the “Think” step.

GUIDELINES FOR FACE COVERING
As more students and staff return to in-person learning, face coverings are required when in a Salem-Keizer Public Schools building, with situational exceptions. They should be worn both indoors and outdoors, including during outdoor recess.
If a student needs a face covering, the school has them available for students.
FREE MEALS AVAILABLE
Grab-N-Go Meals during hybrid learning
While your student is in school for hybrid learning, they will receive all their meals at school at no cost. Hybrid learning students will be fed breakfast and lunch on site and will be offered a supper as they leave.
Each student is allowed one breakfast, one lunch and one supper per day, so that means parents cannot pick up meals from the Grab-N-Go sites when their student is on site for hybrid learning.
Meals while learning online
On the days your student is not on site for hybrid learning, or if your child is learning online each day through the EDGE program, meals are available at any of the Grab-N-Go sites throughout the community.
Meals are free for any child or teen ages 1-18, and adults with special needs ages 18-21 who are enrolled in a Salem-Keizer Public Schools program.
Starting Tuesday, April 13, the schools listed below are open for Grab-N-Go Meals from 11 a.m-1 p.m.
Breakfast, lunch and supper in the bag
We are now including suppers in the Grab-N-Go meal bag. Each bag contains breakfast, lunch and supper. If you are picking up multiple bags, we recommend bringing your own bag to help carry the amount of food being distributed.
