A Note from the Principal
We have officially celebrated the end of a successful fall sports season and are moving into the winter sports. Before we transition fully I want us all to take a moment and congratulate Coach Meyer (girls softball) and Coach Muyco (football) on their Conference Coach of the Year awards. The lessons learned from these leaders have not only influenced their athletes but have carried over into the classrooms and school community as a whole. If you get a moment to thank any of the coaches and sponsors who are investing in the Cougars beyond the classroom those positive messages go a long way and mean more than you can imagine! While I’m thinking of it, wouldn’t it be nice to have a movement of gratitude towards all of the AHS educators? They are some of the hardest working professionals I have ever seen and the love they have for Affton is evident. I challenge you to take a few minutes this week to thank someone working with your children. I want to thank you for all you do to get the kids here, the support in getting homework completed, tests studied for, rides home, etc. Taking care of teenagers is not an easy task but as Dr. Langhans and I often talk about...if you just take a moment to slow down and watch they will bring you the most amazing joy. Affton, you have some wonderful children.
Last week AHS administered an assessment to all faculty and students on the social/emotional learning within our school. The Panorama assessment results will help us understand the coping skills our students are doing well with, the areas we can grow in, and will help us assess the value students have received from the programs we are currently using. I’m hopeful that you can have a conversation with your student about that survey and that it provides a rich conversation about how they feel. If by some chance your student has not completed the survey please have them check their email for a link that was sent. They are welcome to complete the information at any time. This will also be administered in the spring to assess growth over time. Taking care of our kids as a whole, not just their grades is a high priority for all. In this day and age of electronics, not excluding social media, kids are faced with stressors I can’t even imagine having grown up around.
November and third trimester are here! Let’s kick them off to a great start. Enjoy your week.
