TGIM
and at the end of the week we will be in December!?!
Perspective
When we left school last week we hit the road to go to the Polar Express up in Bryson City. We went and picked up the boys and we were on our way. The train was scheduled to depart at 8:15 so we were cutting it pretty close if we were going to get something to eat on the way up. So traveling with a three year old and a six year old is always fun, but they decided to make this one particularly fun. We stopped a total of seven times on the way up for potty breaks, food and an attempt to get Ben some medicine (his tummy was hurting). We finally made it....the train ride was really good and the boys really enjoyed it. Then, back to reality...
We made it to the hotel about 10, Ben was ready to go to bed. Owen was not. He finally went to sleep around 12:30. He is really good at tossing and turning and avoiding sleep. When he finally fell asleep, Ben decided to take over. His stomach was hurting again, so Ashley took Ben and I went to sleep with Owen. They always want their mommy when they are sick. So I got some sleep until about 4:30 when my sweet youngest woke me up without making a sound. He wet the bed and I noticed it way before he did. So he was pretty much up the rest of the morning. He laid down, but it was back to the tossing and turning until we finally got up at 7:30. It was a very interesting night, some would say a bad night.
That morning as we were getting ready to go, I looked out the window at the mountains. It was a beautiful view. There was a long valley in between the mountains. It really was gorgeous. I made a remark about how great it looked and Ben came over and said, "Oh, this looks horrible." I said what do you mean? He said, "it's just a roof and some trees." He was right, if you looked where he was looking it wasn't that great of a view. But if he looked past what was right in front of him, he would have noticed how great the view really was.
I think we do that so many times. We see what is directly in front of us and it does not let us take a look at the whole (bigger) picture. The little hard things that we do every day are the things that sometimes obstruct our view of the wonderful things that we get done. Over the next couple of weeks try to make sure that you look at the big picture when you are presented with an initial ugly view, try to remember that there is a beautiful landscape on the horizon and focus on that.
I am glad Ben pointed out to me what I do on a regular basis. I am particularly glad that he put that in perspective before we left. Owen decided it was his turn to be sick on the way home!
