OASC FIRST
CORONA VIRUS STATEMENT (COVID-19)
- In keeping with CDC recommendations for social distancing, limiting school associated congregations and limiting gatherings of more than 200, Spring District Conventions going forward should be cancelled. We will review this decision again on April 1st but schools about to host should review all your contracts carefully to see what cancellations can be made now. Force Majeure (human-initiated action that cannot be predicted by the party to the contract) will not apply if you cancel, and it may not apply for many other reasons. It is all based on the wording of your contract. Consider altering your district officer election method this year to send out campaign materials via email to advisors to forward to students to watch and mailing ballots to school advisors to have their voting delegates fill out and return to the District Advisor.
- BASIC and Advanced Scholarship deadlines will be extended to April 1st. We will not be requiring a principal signature or advisor letter for this application this year or in the future. However, students need to be aware that these scholarships are based on need and a failure to make a statement of need in the application disqualifies them from consideration.
- I have contacted the BASIC and Advanced Directors regarding contingencies should a University close during our workshops and/or CDC continues to recommend social distancing, limiting school associated congregations, or limiting gatherings over 200 to limit the spread of this virus. Both Directors over finances for their respective workshop have assured me that the OASC has very limited costs associated the workshops should we have to cancel and that due to conservative spending we have a nest in each account to cover any costs should we have to cancel a workshop. Should the OASC have to cancel a BASIC or Advanced Workshop due to the Corona Virus, please know that we will refund your registration to whomever the payment came from or reschedule your delegate to a later session if possible--if a payment is from a school, then a refund check would be mailed to the school (and the school can then reimburse students)--if the payment was from an individual, then a refund check would be mailed back to the individual. So continue to register your students for BASIC and Advanced by going to oascok.org and clicking on the BASIC/Advanced link. While we are hopeful we will not have continuing issues associated with the virus into the summer, please know we are prepared if they do.
Please take time to educate yourself on the virus over Spring Break. The CDC should be your primary resource going forward. Be weary of Oklahoma state health officials making comments in conflict with the CDC. Please find information on Covid-19 at :
Should we decide to go forward with any large group activities in the OASC in the future...
Here is the link to key planning recommendations for mass gatherings from the World Health Organization:
planning document issued by the World Health Organization.
The primary takeaways from this are as follows:
At your conference site have a direct link with local/national public health officials including the local provider of health services for the event. You should be able to make contact 24 hours a day.
Designate someone on site from your group who will be the designated contact person with that health agency (Since you are managing the conference, you might want someone else to be this contact).
Assess whether you have attendees from affected areas.
Have a room in which someone who falls ill can be quarantined, know where that person will be taken, and how that person will be transported.
Have a plan to provide participants with information on obtaining health advice.
Know where/how attendees could be tested for COVID-19 if necessary
Have a clear understanding of what has been done in the venue regarding sanitization. availability of hand sanitizers, etc.
