NOT for sale- 1961 Amphicar
(or Volkswagen Schwimmwagen)
A Floating (whaaat?? floating??) Car!!
The 1961 Amphicar was a water-proof floating disaster. It has been said that it was a terrible car and a terrible "boat". In the water, the little funny-looking piece of tin chugged along at 7 mph. Tops.
Some more about this car...
The Amphicar was a sort of knock-off version of another type of water/land transportation vehicle, known as the Volkswagen Schwimmwagen. These (mostly) all-terrain vehicles were often used in the military for special missions, however, they were mostly used for special Nazi missions during WW2. For this reason, many people call this car the Nazi Schwimmwagen. Thus, America created a more human-friendly version of the so called "magnificent" car, now called the Amphicar.
So, what happened to this car?
Well, see what happened is... this car, although seemingly has some potential, was a total defect. While advertised as a car that would take you on water and land, it actually wasn't watertight. Some buyers of the car complained that water leaked in as soon as it slipped into the drink. So,... the car was discontinued. Only 4,000 were made. Done deal.
