Thankful for Our School Community
This year we have so much to be thankful for at Albert Schweitzer Elementary! As we transitioned back to full in-person learning this year, staff and students continued to show resiliency, grit, and flexibility. Teachers have been engaged in many layers of professional development during morning time before students arrive, during their lunch break, and a full-day professional development session on November 2nd. As a district, we are embedding the MTSS framework, which stands for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. MTSS is a standards-aligned, comprehensive school improvement framework for enhancing academic, behavioral, and social-emotional outcomes for ALL students. Staff are currently working on addressing student needs and differentiating in the classroom to provide targeted skills during Guided Reading and WIN time.
Family engagement is part of the MTSS Framework. Parent/Teacher conferences are on December 10th, so I encourage parents to build on the home/school connection by taking part in conferences and asking a lot of questions to help support your child. Teaching and learning is a collaborative effort, and we know from the research that students are more successful in their learning with a strong school and home partnership. We appreciate all that you do to support your child's learning!
Have a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving Holiday!
Take care,
Dr. Amy Orlando

Grade 3: Animal Habitats
Students in Mrs. Burns's third grade class are hard at work learning about animal habitats. As a wrap-up to their 3-week science unit on Animals, the students constructed animal habitat dioramas. Over the three weeks, they learned about animal life cycles, classifying invertebrates vs. vertebrates, adaptations, migration, and predators vs. prey. The students chose an animal and gathered information about the animals' habitat, what they eat, and interesting facts about their animal. They incorporated their findings in the diorama to accurately depict the animal's habitat. Mrs. Burns is proud of their hard work and attention to details!
Getting Our Hands on Good Literature in Grade 4
Mrs. Moyer assists students and families in managing the stress and challenges that we are currently facing. We appreciate all that she does for our school community.

Thanksgiving Help
Albert Schweitzer Elementary School supported families in our school community by asking staff and families to donate items for those in need at Schweitzer. Donated items included stuffing, gravy, corn, green beans, cranberry sauce, instant mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, dinner rolls, and Redner’s gift cards to purchase everything else needed for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. One Schweitzer family even donated $250 worth of gift cards! We are forever grateful to the Schweitzer family and are proud to take care of families in our own school community.
