A Message from the Librarian
Greetings! My name is Erika Murray, and I am the new Librarian at Driscoll Middle School. I am so happy to be here, and I look forward to getting students excited about reading and learning this year. This newsletter showcases the many things that went on in the Library in September. Mornings in the Library
Students hanging out, reading, and working on assignments in the library before school.
Student Interest Survey
During Library Orientation, students completed an interest survey that will help the librarian offer library programs they enjoy.
Lunch & Learn in the Library
Students learned how to access the NEISD Digital Library (OverDrive) from their personal mobile devices during their lunch period.

Research and Application
8th grade Science classes researched Issac Newton and his theories of Force & Motion using the LibGuide and then demonstrated and observed Newton's 1st Law of Motion with various outside activities.
Driscoll Celebrates the Freedom to Read!
During Banned Books Week (September 21-27), 8th grade Reading classes participated in a lesson in the library on banned books, censorship, and 1st amendment rights. Students were outraged that many of their favorite books had been challenged or banned in libraries and schools across the country. The lesson led to some pretty heated discussion!

Mrs. Gonzalez loves the Harry Potter series, which has been frequently challenged.
Custodian Booked for Reading a Banned Classic!
Mr. Tyson's favorite banned book, To Kill a Mockingbird, was first banned in the 1960s and continues to be challenged to this day!
Collaboration
Ms. Gonzales and Mrs. Murray teamed up to teach a lesson on Copyright Laws and Fair Use Guidelines to all technology classes.
Other Library Usage
- The Achievement Center is held after school in the Library on Mondays thru Thursdays from 3:30-4:15. Teachers are available for tutoring and homework help in all subjects.
- The Fellowship of Christian Athletes met in the Library before school for their first meeting of the year.
- The library and the library conference room were used for various meetings and training sessions (e.g., faculty meetings, administration meetings, district Social Studies department planning, etc.).
