Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Panther Families,
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service -- let's be reminded of keeping Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s example of integrity, intellect, loving spirit, and mission of peace. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Day of Service affords us the time and place to serve and reflect on his beautiful example.
In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a U.S. Federal holiday on the third Monday in January to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. King was a social activist and minister who played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. King sought equality and human rights for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and all victims of injustice through peaceful protest. Although MLK Day is a federal holiday, it is designed as a day of service to strengthen communities and address social problems.
As we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day tomorrow, January 17th, students in all of our schools will be participating in activities inspired by the work and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. throughout the week. We look forward to seeing what our students will learn and accomplish!
Just a friendly reminder that in the event of inclement weather, we will resort to Flexible Instructional Days (FID), which means a day of inclement weather will not be made up on another day, but rather students will work remotely with the flexibility of working from home with a three-day grace period. For more information, please see below.
Best Wishes,
Donna
Flexible Instructional Day (FID) Guidelines
Masks on School Transportation
Families are reminded that masks are required while riding school transportation per the CDC Order regarding public transportation effective February 1, 2021. Please help us to manage this mitigation effort and remind your children to wear their mask while boarding a school bus/van and keep it on until they exit. Bus drivers have a supply of disposable masks and will provide them to students who do not have a mask. Students will not be denied transportation as a result of not having a mask, but they will be referred to the office so building administration can better understand the reason for non-compliance. Consequences may be assigned for repeated non-compliance.
Music Masterclass
High School students welcomed Dr. Erik Forst from Messiah University this week to have an intensive masterclass.
Dr. Forst instructed the students from all four grade levels to think differently about how to play music, especially percussion. Students were encouraged to demonstrate skills, think out loud, and even make mistakes so that Dr. Forst could assist in their learning.
Mr. Lidle, our Band Director, is thankful and appreciative of all of the professionals in our community who are willing to spend their time coming to East Pennsboro to teach our students!
We look forward to hosting other masterclasses for our students in the future. Thank you to Dr. Erik Forst and to Mr. Coleman Lidle for providing this wonderful opportunity to our students!
