Pro-choice is the right choice

Pro-choice: legalize abortions

Abortions should be legalized for the safety and well-being of women and children. Legal abortions will ensure that women do not get unsafe abortions and will prevent children being born into an unsafe environment where they are not able to be taken care of.

Illegal Abortion is unsafe abortion.

Making abortion illegal will not put a stop to woman getting abortions. They will find a clinic that will secretly (and unsafely) perform the procedure. 68,000 women world-wide die due to unsafe abortions every year. Legalizing it would prevent these deaths.

The Truth

Odds are that 1 in 3 women will be victim of sexual violence in her lifetime. Should this mean that 33% of women should be forced to carry out a pregnancy because of this violation? One story tells about a girl who got raped at a pool party by the birthday girl's uncle at age 13. She then found out she was pregnant. Should she be forced to give birth to this child and lose hope of having a normal and good future? Should she have to give up her dreams? Should the child have to grow up with a mother that cannot support them and no father? The answer is no.

  • 70,000 girls ages 15-19 die each year from pregnancy and childbirth, but the babies that do survive have a 60% higher chance of dying as well.
  • 14,000 women have an abortion following rape or incest.
  • The risk of a woman's death from abortion is about every one in 100,000, whereas the risk of a woman dying from giving birth is approximately 13.3 out of every 100,000.
  • 75% of insured women lack coverage for contraceptive services.
  • 83% of women getting abortions are unmarried, meaning if they had the child, it would not grow up with a father.
  • Only 21% of Americans believe that abortions should be completely illegal.

Unintended pregnancies account for over half of all pregnancies. This means that the woman is not ready for a baby, cannot support the baby, or simply does not want a child. So, if the woman cannot get an abortion, the child will be born into a world that is not ready for it. The mother may not be able to support it, leading to an unsafe and unhealthy life for the child. If the mother cannot even afford diapers, then they should not be forced to bring a child into the world. Forcing a woman that is not ready to be a mother to give birth can lead to child neglect or putting the baby up for adoption.

Unplanned pregnancies can and will put an end to the mother's hopes and dreams for the future. They may lose the respect of family and friends if they are of a young age, and it can get in the way of education. Abortion is a completely safe alternative to this.

It is NOT murder.

A common argument against terminating a pregnancy is that it is murdering the baby. This is a completely false statement. Up until the mother gives birth, the fetus inside is not able to think or feel. It cannot be mad, it cannot be sad. It's not a baby, it is not a human being yet. It is simply a fetus. 9 in 10 abortions are performed during the first trimester of the pregnancy. This means that the head has barely formed, let alone a brain (or feelings).

Not your body, not your choice.

When it comes down to it, every woman should have the right to decide what she wants to do with her body. It is a personal decision, not a political debate. No one should have the right to tell a woman what to do with her body.
