Art Needs

We have a new face in the CAMP department! Welcome Mrs. Carolyn Marks to the ART classroom! She is going to have our scholars doing amazing things in art class this year. Mrs. Marks would very much appreciate donations of BLACK SHARPIES (fine point and ultra fine point). This is supply that will be used often by all students. Also, she could use any "kid appropriate" magazines (such as Better Homes & Gardens, Southern Living, Good Housekeeping). Thank you for supporting Mrs. Marks and her upcoming art adventures with our scholars!

Got Puzzles????

Do you have any child-appropriate puzzles at home that your kiddo has outgrown or doesn't want/need anymore? We could use them here at WBA for our Puzzles Signature Course.

Signature Course - FALL REQUESTS due 9/9

We are doing something new at WBAYS this year that staff is super excited about! Every scholar is getting the opportunity to chose a signature course (think club here) to participate in during the school day 6 times during the fall semester. Our staff members are hosting a variety of fun courses that we believe our scholars will be interested in. Scholars have received the WBAYS Signature Course Catalog Fall 2019 and a grade level specific Signature Course Request sheet. Please review the course catalog with your child and help them to choose the 3 courses that most interest him/her. We will give our best effort to match each scholar to the courses he/she are most interested in. Exciting right?!? Signature Course Requests are due no later than 9/9. Scholars will have the opportunity to choose courses for the Spring semester in December.

Birthday Celebrations

At WBA we love to celebrate a birthday with our scholars and staff. Scholars are invited to make their birthday announcement during our morning announcements.

Although a parent is not prohibited from providing food for for children in the child’s classroom for his or her birthday, please be aware that children in the school may have severe allergies to certain food products. Therefore, it is imperative to discuss this with the child’s teacher prior to bringing any food in this circumstance. Also, it is WBA policy that any food items brought for birthday celebrations be individually wrapped/contained and will be sent home with students. Those food items will not be consumed at school.

Spirit Wear for Sale

Both WBAYS and PTA are providing opportunities to purchase spirit swag! WBA is selling general WBA spirit shirts, $12 cash or check. PTA is taking orders for t-shirts in House colors and PTA shirts.

Please return forms in PTA packets by Aug. 29th.

What's all this business about ACADEMY?

Willie Brown staff believes in continuous improvement and we are excitedly launching a new version of our campus...WILLIE BROWN ACADEMY OF YOUNG SCHOLARS!!! We are so blessed to have the flexibility to add curriculum that focuses on GROWTH MINDSET, SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL LEARNING, and COLLEGE & CAREER AWARENESS! Teachers will weave this content into the rigorous academic curriculum we already teach while making sure we provide opportunities for our students to COMMUNICATE, CREATE, COLLABORATE, AND THINK CRITICALLY. WHY? We have a strong desire for our scholars to be college, career and LIFE ready...for whatever challenges they will face. By incorporating this curriculum into our teaching framework and partnering with our parents and community, we will build up scholars who will thrive in all they set out to do. #watchmesoar

WBA Houses

At Willie Brown Academy, all scholars and staff are grouped into HOUSES. We have 5 houses....RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, KINDNESS, HONESTY, and PRIDE. A house is a team consisting of staff scholars from each grade level. This is an opportunity for our scholars and staff to form relationships and make connections with staff and scholars from other classes and grade levels. Each house is represented by a specific color:

RESPECT = red

RESPONSIBILITY = orange

KINDNESS = yellow

HONESTY = green

PRIDE = blue

Kinder scholars and any new scholars to the campus will be sorted into their assigned house during the first week of school. All returning scholars will continue in the house they have been part of. Scholars and staff are encouraged to wear their house color on the last instructional day of the week to show unity and house pride.

Scholars are awarded house points for showing good character and exemplifying our core expectations (see photo below). House point drawings for prizes are done weekly and the leading house (most house points accumulated) will be awarded each grading period.
