Wauwatosa Montessori School
February 8, 2019
Looking at our playground, it's hard to believe we had snow and cold days just a little over a week ago! The drastic changes in temperatures have melted much of our snow, turned our playground and fields into a giant pond and now, a giant ice rink with the cold freezing things over again. While we do try to limit the areas students can play in when they are extremely wet, inevitably we still have many little feet that get wet at this time of year. Please keep sending your child with appropriate winter gear for recess and especially boots and an extra pair of socks in their backpack is a great idea.
For the last five years, the Wauwatosa Schools has been committed to our Equity work and this past year, our district adopted our first District Equity Plan. As part of the District Equity Plan, all schools will have two Family Listening Sessions this year. The purpose of these sessions is to give families the opportunity to speak about the positive experiences and challenging experiences they have had in our district. It is our chance to hear the perspective of important stakeholders as to how they view our schools and their children’s experiences. The first session at Montessori will be on Tuesday, March 5th from 6-7:30pm in Room 13 and lead by our instructional equity coach, Tracy Carus. We encourage you to attend this meeting, because all voices deserve to be heard. Right At School will be staffing childcare for this event. Please fill out this Google Doc if you need childcare for children ages 4-13 during the meeting so they can plan accordingly: https://goo.gl/forms/vNn1o0tHzT4X1rfF3. All childcare requests must be entered by Wednesday, February 27th. Information regarding the first listening session is in your child's Friday folder today as well.
The annual EFW Walk/Run fundraiser has a new name to match its new format and new location in 2019. The event, now called the EFW Rush for Education, will start at 8 a.m. May 4 and be staged along the Oak Leaf Trail with start and finish lines at Hart Park. New this year, we have added a competitive 5K run. The mile fun run/walk remains part of this family fun morning. Online early bird registration begins today and runs through March 2. Participation is $25 per person for the timed 5K and $12 per person for the one mile fun run/walk.You can sign up here.
Last but not least, Save the Date! The PTSA 2019 Spring Fling fundraiser will be on April 13 from 7-11 pm. Tickets go on sale soon and there is a flyer in Friday folders!
Have a great weekend,

Service Society
Hello Families,
The WMS Service Society would love to have any men’s hats, gloves or scarves (new or gently used) to donate to the homeless gentlemen staying at the Guest House shelter during these cold winter months. The men spend much of the day outside searching for jobs attending treatment programs in the community. Your donations will be truly appreciated and put to great use. Below you will find a statement about the work the Guest House is involved in:
“The Guest House of Milwaukee provides shelter, housing, education, and services to Milwaukee's homeless who seek to transform their lives with dignity and purpose. Guest House has been doing this work to help people overcome homelessness for over 30 years. The Guest House provides shelter to 86 men each night and over 700 individuals a year. The Guest House also provides permanent, supported housing for over 400 men, women, and families in the Milwaukee area. Our Counseling Clinic us certified by the State of Wisconsin and provides mental health and Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA) counseling. Additionally, our Cream City Gardens provide fresh, home-grown produce to the Guest House and our neighbors, including local good pantries. We rely completed on community support to provide hot dinner to our guests 7 nights a week and have many item donation needs. We are so grateful to our generous Milwaukee community for making our work possible!”
There will be a bin in the school lobby from 01/21/19 until 02/15/19 for a collection. Let’s fill it up!!! Please wash and dry all items prior to placing in donation bins. Thank you for giving to a wonderful cause:).

PTSA Corner
- Hope to see many of you at the Sweetheart Dance on Friday, February 15 from 5:30-7:30pm. This event is for the whole family and there will be food available for purchase from the AP students.

- Spring Fling 2019 is right around the corner! For those new to the school or unfamiliar with the event, it is the largest and most important fundraiser of the year for the PTSA - and we need your help! If anyone in the school community would like to become an in-kind sponsor, or to donate tangible or experience-related items, please contact Amy Randall at arandall@uwalmuni.com ASAP. Families may sponsor the event outright or promote their businesses to the entire school community. Or, some donation items may include: offering 2 hours of interior painting, photography lessons, 4 hours with a personal trainer, sewing lessons, hosting a pedal tavern excursion, cooking a gourmet dinner for a small group, tickets to sporting events, concert tickets – and the list of ideas goes on! We would love to show off all the talent our school community has to offer. Please consider sponsoring or donating if possible. We are hoping to wrap up sponsorships and donations by early to mid-March, so please reach out sooner vs. later! Thank you!
