New Beginnings Class Newsletter
For the Week of 9/5-9/8
What We Worked On
Read Aloud- We read the stories "The Kissing Hand," "How Do Dinosaurs Go To School," and "Llama Llama Misses Mama." They were all stories about characters starting school just like us.
Skills- We worked on our class procedures and what our class rules look like. School is different than home because we have more structure and more rules than what can be at home. This can be confusing for children entering school for the first time. We practiced how to play with toys appropriately, how to clean up toys, and how to sit on the rug so everyone has room to sit. We also worked on how to listen to a story being read aloud.
We also worked on our OT skills by playing with play-doh and model clay, scrunching up paper to make and playing with glue to make an apple.
Looking Ahead- We will continue to work on reviewing the procedures, expectations, and rules for school. We'll incorporate some crafts for an apple theme and an all about me theme. We will also begin some assessments.
What Can I Do?
We are working on our daily self-help skills as well. Here are some things you can start at home to help your child become more independent.
- Have your child get their coats/shoes/backpacks with only a little help and then no help. Let your child always try something first before offering help.
- Let your child get their own clothes on. If you start with the pants, and have your child sit to put their pants on, they will more likely have some success.
- Use a fork or a spoon when eating. Most children, including my own, prefer to use their fingers, but if prompted enough, eating with a fork and a spoon will become a habit.
- Begin the process of drinking from a cup, if they do not do so already. We will work on it during our breakfast time, and give the children straws at lunch. Please help us by also trying a cup first and then using a straw if needed.

During the winter months, I will also send messages through Remind to let you know if Gouverneur Elementary has a delay or a cancellation. Sometimes the weather has been fine in our neighboring areas but has been rough in Gouverneur.

- Send a text to the number 81010 with the message @3h29992
- Download the Remind app and then put in the code "@3h29992" to join our class.
Don't forget
- To sign the sheet that goes home with the newsletter and send back in on Monday saying you have read the newsletter.
- To send in your school information packet if you have not already done so.
