Publication of Baugo Community Schools: Spring 2021

Superintendent's Message

As we near the end of the school year, I stand in awe at what our schools have been able to accomplish, in spite of the pandemic. Our community rallied around in-person learning and our schools held class five days a week most of the year. Although not ideal, our students adopted mask wearing and other mitigation processes to ensure our schools remained open. As we monitor the impact of the pandemic on our students, school leaders are committed to remediation and enrichment, social emotional health services, physical plant systems upgrades, and improved instruction. Our goal is to ensure that the pandemic leaves no lasting impact on our children or the community. I am proud and eternally grateful to our certified and classified employees who have worked tirelessly this year to ensure our students have had the best opportunity to grow socially and academically this year.

After a Year Off, the Jimmie Olympics Return to Jimtown High School

The Jimmie Olympics is back--better late than never. The Jimmie Olympics is traditionally held in January, but with covid concerns it was rescheduled for later this spring--March 22 - March 26. The format was a little different, and we had to streamline some activities; however, the hallways looked great and the students were eager to participate. Traditions and activities like the Jimmie Olympics make Jimtown High a very special place to attend school.

The dress up days were as follows:

  • Monday = Pajama Day
  • Tuesday = Twin Day

  • Wednesday = Yin Yang Day

  • Thursday = Neon/Tie Dye Day

  • Friday = Hallway Decoration Theme Day

The class hallway themes were:

  • Freshmen = Inside Out

  • Sophomores = Harry Potter

  • Juniors = Shrek

  • Seniors = Scooby Doo

JHS Car Show

Attention car and cycle enthusiasts--the Jimtown Car & Cycle show is back! This year’s show will be held on May 15, 2021, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. In addition to the cars and cycles on display, the JHS Band Boosters will be sponsoring food vendors, and we will host a live music stage. This year we have Quentin Flagg as our headliner, who will be joined by the Jimtown Jazz Band and Choir. Admission is FREE and open to the public, so come out to this family friendly event for a good time--check out some sweet rides, enjoy some good food, and groove to great music!

Anyone wanting to show off their hot rod, vintage, or tricked out car/cycle may enter--trophies will be awarded to various category winners. The entry fee is $20 with all proceeds going to support JHS student activities. If interested, contact Rita at 295-2343 ext. 2271 or email a reservation to carshow@baugo.org.

Jimtown Jr. High Offers Hope

Jimtown Junior High is excited to be a part of a program called the Hope Squad. The Hope Squad program was built by educators in partnership with mental health experts to change how schools approach mental health and suicide prevention. Hope Squad members are students who are trained to be aware of their peers and watch for warning signs. Our students have nominated the peers they feel most comfortable talking to and we will begin the training process late spring and early fall. We appreciate this opportunity for Hope Squad members to actively look for ways to support their peers.

Spring Sports are ON for 2021

Sadly for our student athletes, all spring sports got cancelled last year due the Covid-19 Pandemic. That was rough.

A new year brings new hope and a new season. Spring sports are BACK!! The students are ready to play and the excitement is building as the weather continues to warm and we can move outside for some great competition.

Spectators will be expected to practice social distancing (which is easier when we move outside) and also wear masks when in areas where social distancing is not possible, (common areas in and out of the games, at the concession stand, etc.)

Parents and fans may see all spring sports schedules by visiting our website. While you are in the site, please sign up for “alerts” and get custom alerts sent right to your phone if there are schedule changes or other important information that is released.

Intervention Opportunities at Jimtown Intermediate

We have the opportunity at JIS to provide intervention opportunities for our students this past nine weeks. We began with an extra boost for some of our third graders to help prepare them for the IRead test at the beginning of March. Our third grade team worked with students three days a week from 3:30-4:30. We also have a group of staff members providing some students with after school tutoring in math. We have identified students using the data we have from our diagnostic testing and teacher referrals of students who could use some additional math instruction and intervention and are able to work with 80+ students after school from 3:30-4:30. We are excited to be able to offer our students these extra supports!!

Baugo Transportation Changes

Baugo Transportation is excited to finish out our school year Jimtown Strong. We are very proud of our drivers' hard work and flexibility in getting our Jimmies safely to and from school each day!

Families with students at Jimtown, please look for a new transportation request form to come home. Only students that have returned a transportation request form will be routed for the 2021-22 school year.

Have a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing all the students back next year!

New Jimtown Elementary After School Clubs

Close to 100 Jimtown Elementary students are participating in one of several after school programs this spring. Students are having fun as they learn academic, athletic and social skills. Several teachers have created clubs based on their passions or interests, including soccer, book studies, STEM, wrestling, and thematic units.

Return of the Family Fun Fair

Jimtown Elementary continued its tradition of the Family Fun Fair, just in a slightly different manner. The traditional auction items and basket raffle were moved to an online auction format and the student games were played in gym class. Thanks to our PTO, students were able to play the games and bring home a bag of prizes at no cost. Also, a big thank you to the community businesses and families who donated many items for the Fun Fair. Look for us to be back on campus next year!

Summer Projects

We are gearing up for a busy summer! Many projects that we have been working on will ramp into high gear this summer. Solar panels, roof maintenance and kitchen upgrades to name a few. The hardworking custodial staff will start the campus wide summer cleaning right after graduation to prepare for the fall return of staff and students! If you need anything from us during the summer please contact us by calling 574-293-8583 ext 1002 and we will get back to you asap!
