5th Grade Virtual Field Trip
NMS 5th graders took a trip across the United States with National Geographic Virtual Field Trips during November, Native American Heritage Month. Their trip featured three storytellers who shared their unique insights as Native Americans and incredible stories about their work. First, the students traveled to Arizona to meet Jim, a Zuni mapmaker and farmer, who taught about perspectives in mapmaking and honoring the land. Next, they went to the Flathead Reservation in Montana to meet photographer Tailyr Irvine, a member of the Salish and Kootenai Tribes, whose work showcases modern Indigenous people and brings attention to the federal government's complicated blood quantum requirements for Indigneous people. Finally, the students traveled to Ontarrio, Canada to meet Tsista Kennedy, a First Nations member, and hear his story about cutting his hair.
