Read-A-Thon

Thank you so much for helping to make our first ever Read-A-Thon a huge success! We are thrilled to announce that as a school we read 93,790 minutes! WOW!!!

Our grade levels also participated in a grade level competition to see who could read the most minutes. First grade, third grade and fourth grade were our winners and will be enjoying a silly string battle! Way to go, Bulldogs!

Because this was the first time we have sponsored a Read-A-Thon, we didn't have any idea what to expect to be able to raise. As a building we raised $10,308, and we are completely blown away! We will be working together as a staff second semester to identify exactly how we will be able to utilize these funds to work to create spaces for students to engage in hands-on Real World learning. We will report back to share exactly how these funds are being used in our building to support all of our students K-5!

Veteran's Day

If your student has a family member that has served in the military, please send us a picture of that person along with the following information:

  • your student's first and last name
  • the relation of the service member to your student
  • the service member's branch, rank and if applicable, what action they have been in

Please email the information and picture to HToffice@ksdr1.net. We would love to honor your family's service this month!

Behavior Intervention Support Team (BIST)

Hawthorne teachers and staff have been learning over the past year how to best support our students who may struggle at times with behaviors by utilizing the BIST model. The purpose of the BIST model is to partner with students when they are struggling and help them be accountable for their actions to make changes in their life.

BIST is designed to teach and protect students through GRACE and ACCOUNTABILITY so that students can demonstrate three important life skills listed below and make good choices.

Grace is unconditional acceptance of students, but not negative behavior.

Accountability is allowing students to accept responsibility for themselves and their actions.

Life Skills

I can make good choices even if I am mad or have an overwhelming feeling.

I can be okay even if others are not okay.

I can do something even if it's hard or I don't want to.

Free Breakfast and Lunch for All KSD Students!

For the 2021-2022 school year, we will once again have free breakfast and lunch for students within Kearney School District boundaries.

K-5 students attending school in person may receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Students who choose to eat breakfast at school will need to check in with their teacher, drop their belongings off in the classroom and then go to the Commons to get breakfast.

Free meals include breakfast and lunch but do not include a la carte items, extra milk or

second lunches.
