Panther Press Monthly Newsletter
September 2019 Vol: 2 .
From the Desk of Mrs. Paterson......
Hello GYS families! We are well into 1st trimester with routines and expectations set in classrooms and throughout our campus. We continue to encourage students to arrive to school on time and every day. We understand that mornings are busy and unexpected issues arise, however we ask that you time manage effectively and help your child take responsibility for their belongings, making sure they communicate their needs before arriving to campus. Lunch Detentions continue to be held once a week for students who have reached their 4th and subsequent tardy. Administrative Detentions are issued for students who are tardy 7 or more mornings. Although these policies come with some consequence, we are beginning to see improvements in timeliness and increased efforts to arrive on campus by 7:45 a.m. Please note that this includes zero period. Excessive tardies/absences will result in zero period privileges being revoked at the quarter.
This month I ask you to look at your child’s growth and maturity. Consider letting your middle school student experience the consequences of being irresponsible. If he/she forgets their project or PE clothes, and they send you a text begging you to swing by the school to make a delivery, consider not granting the request. Although difficult to say no or deny a request made by a teary child, receiving a zero or sitting out from an activity may help them remember next time. This is how our children learn.
Thank you for your support at home and your presence in the lives of your child. I hope you are enjoying the middle school years and as always, please don't hesitate to reach out to us should you have any questions.

Cell Phone Policy
Here are a few things to remember:
Cell phones must be turned off as soon as a student steps on to the campus. Cell phones that ring or vibrate during class will be handled by the classroom teacher and their class expectations.
Cell phones may not be used as a camera on school grounds. Cameras are prohibited on campus due to student privacy rights.
Cell phones and ear buds are not permitted during lunch time. We expect our students to build relationships with their peers. We want them to engage in conversation and get to know one another.
Cell phones are expensive. MVSD is not liable for lost or damaged items brought to school. Unfortunately, accidents happen. Even when phones are securely put away, back packs are stepped on and thrown down....the student forgetting that they have their phone in there.
We ask for your support and review your phone expectations at home. If a student needs to contact you during the day, we ask that they see their teacher and ask for permission. The front office is available as well. We understand that your child has a phone because you love and care about their well being while they are gone. As many of us are parents ourselves, we get it. Thank you for your support in this matter.
Homework causing stress at home? We are here to help!
All we ask is that students report promptly at 2:35 PM, sign in and be ready to seek help. We have 2 highly qualified teachers at each session to help review the daily lesson, help answer homework questions or even reteach a concept that was never understood. Students who are attending only to wait for their ride, hang out with friends, or are disruptive will be asked to leave immediately.
Please don't let homework become a source of frustration or anger at home. Encourage your student to seek help. We hope to see your child in attendance!
Saturday Enrichment Activity #2 Don't miss out, space is limited!
Grace Yokley Middle School is committed to offering quality academic programs for all students. It is with great pleasure that we offer an exciting academic enrichment program, Saturday Enrichment Academy (SEA).
SEA is designed to offer unique enrichment opportunities for all GYS students. SEA’S academic focus is to provide hands-on lessons that build deep understanding and inspire students to maintain a lifetime love of learning.
SEA courses are taught by credentialed teachers employed by MVSD and guests from the City of Ontario or other approved individuals who bring a skill or expertise to our campus. Courses are available to all students currently enrolled at GYS. Class sizes are limited, so sign up early to ensure your child has a spot.
Drop by and say hello! We would love to see you!
