A Successful Week!
This week FLEW by... It always does when you are as busy as we are!
We ended the day by cleaning out our desks. Have you heard there is a Desk Fairy that occasionally stops by in the middle of the night to check desks in Room 9? If she checks and a desk is spotless, she leaves a small treat.
We have 19 out of 21 students participating in the October Reading Challenge. The forms with parent signatures are due Monday for the first week. The reading does not have to be logged in Biblionasium.
Good luck to Maddy who is performing in Aladdin Jr this weekend. She has had quite a week of late night practices, but bounced into school each day ready to give her best!!
Jayden is a history lover! I told him about how my oldest son, Justin, as a first grader memorized all 42 presidents in order. He was so impressed he went home and asked his mom to write down all of the presidents. He is currently working on memorizing them. Isn't that awesome?
Scholastic orders are due Tuesday, October 9. There are some really great books in this order. Please consider purchasing just one book for your child. The excitement your child shows about receiving a book at school is fun to see and it is sending the message that reading and having your own books is very important.
It is such a joy to teach your children each day. They wear me out, but I go home tired with a smile on my face!
That's it for now!

Community Circle
A few highlights from our morning Community Circle time:
- One day each week we discuss, "saying I'm sorry." We learned that saying I'm sorry involves three things: apologizing, taking ownership, and asking if there is anything that can be done to make things better. It's neat to see the kids using those parts as they apologize to each other throughout the school day.
- Part of our daily Community Circle involves doing an activity to destress - deep breathing, yoga pose, listening to calm music, etc... The students' favorite destress activity is when we watch a short funny video (America's Funnies Videos, kids telling jokes, etc...). Hearing the belly laughs of eight-year-olds is sure to start your day off on the right foot!

Here is What is Planned for our Short Week Next Week: October 8-10
Reading:
- Making predictions
- Retelling and Summarizing to show comprehension
Writing: Personal Narrative
- I will grade each students' Personal Narrative over fall break. I use an extensive rubric to score each piece. Students put them in their Data Binder for safekeeping. I will send them home the week we return from fall break.
Social Studies: Unit 4 - Immigration
- We will test over Unit 4 on Wednesday, October 10.
Math: Unit 2 - Math Tools, Time, and Multiplication
- Multiplication: Equal Groups
- Multiplication Arrays
Please encourage your child to practice his/her multiplication facts! Spending 5-10 minutes each night makes a huge difference in the rate at which students progress with higher-level math concepts. Some students are ready for more challenging concepts, but basic multiplication facts are holding them back.
