ALSDE Releases Accountability Report Cards

The Alabama State Department of Education released their annual state report cards for public schools last Friday. For the second consecutive year, Corner Middle School scored an 86 on the report card that assigns weighted grades to several categories including student proficiency, student growth, and chronic absenteeism.

Images of our state report card are below as well as a link to the al.com article that not only gives a very good breakdown of how schools are scored, but also links to see how all of the schools in our district and state scored.

Attendance Matters

This week's attendance report shows an increase in the number of students who are in danger of being chronically absent as well as an increase in tardies. We will begin having Saturday School from 7:30-11:30 for those students who are excessively tardy to school.

Letters have gone out describing the referral process to the Jefferson County Family Court's Early Warning process for those who fall into the at-risk column. Families, please have your students at school at school and on-time each day!

Thoughts from the Principal . . .

With the release of the state report cards by the Alabama State Department of Education, we learned on Friday that Corner Middle School earned an 86 again this year. Our district average was an 81. Our feeder pattern schools did well, too. West Jefferson Elementary earned an 85. Bagley Elementary School earned an 89. Corner High School earned an 88.

There is some complicated formula that compiles a sum of weighted scores that I will not try to translate for you. What I will say is that our teachers and students continue to work hard, and we continue to need your support to grow every day.

We are FAR from being where we want or need to be. We want to see that every student is proficient. We want to not only reduce, but eliminate chronic absenteeism. We want every student to grow. Pipe dream? Maybe. But we believe that every single student and teacher and administrator can get better at Corner Middle School. We need your help to accomplish these goals.

I hope that each of you congratulates your student and your student's faculty and staff in all of the schools in our feeder patter for their hard work as we continue to improve!
