From Mrs. Bibik
Beginning next week, our students will select a Flextime option only on Wednesdays and Thursdays on our block schedule days. The purpose of Flextime is to provide students and staff opportunities to meet with clubs, learn a new skill, and connect with others who share similar interests. Through our discussions with the RMS staff and observation of use of this time, we have noticed less engagement with the purpose of Flextime. To provide an opportunity to reconnect to that purpose, we believe that limiting Flextime to only our block schedule days will provide a number of benefits:
- Students will be able to more thoughtfully plan for Flextime opportunities as we have seen an increase this year in the number of students who do not select a Flextime activity.
- Teachers will be able to provide more robust offerings as this provides more time to plan and acquire the resources they need for engaging activities.
- With a reduction of class transitions on our 8 period days, each class period is extended a few minutes which allows time for teachers to build in short "brain breaks" throughout the day at times that fit the lessons they are teaching. All in all this creates a less hurried day for all.
- With the reality of substitute teacher shortages we currently face, this allows us to more readily provide supervision to all classes.
We hope that your child will find this a beneficial alteration. We will be monitoring this change in our surveys of staff and students throughout the coming months to ensure that we are providing a supportive learning environment and high quality instructional experiences. As always, we are thankful for your partnership in making Riverwatch the best that it can be.
