From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
Great job to the SOTW for our last two performances in marching band uniform for this school year! The energy at both parades was a lot of fun and festive, and we helped our WPHS community kickoff the holiday season.
Congratulations to Curtis, Gabby, Henry, Madelyn, Jason, Emily, and Lilah on their performances at FSU & USF this weekend! We can't wait to hear all about what you got to do on Monday.
We're all excited to get our community back together this Thursday, December 8 for the annual Winter Band Concert at 7 PM. The performance is free and open to the public, as are all of our concerts in our home auditorium. Don't forget to invite family, friends, and neighbors! Please see Mrs. Adkinson's section below for details about our cookie reception in the lobby after the performance.
It's Solo & Ensemble MPA Registration Time! Please see the S&E MPA Section below for details. Registrations are due no later than Monday, 12/5. If any students have last minute questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Mr. Clemente & Mr. Smith.
Park Philharmonic rehearsal after school on Tuesday, 12/6 from 2:30 - 4 PM in the Band room. Orchestra Winds & Perc. also have Winterfest Dress Rehearsal scheduled next Monday, 12/12 and the Winterfest performance on Tuesday, 12/13. Parents - don't forget your tickets to Winterfest!
A friendly reminder that Payment 3 for the New York Tour is due no later than this Friday, December 9. Payments may be made on SchoolPay.com, by check made out to WPHS Band, or by cash. After this payment, we have a little bit of a break until our next payment is due in February. If you are paying by check, it must be turned into the Band office no later than 2:30 PM on Friday.
Many people have some credit available to use for part of your payment, which is great! To utilize your credit, please contact both Kim Somers at kimrosesomers@gmail.com and the directors. To view your credit, login to your account on CutTime.net.
Let's make it a great week! Two more weeks until Winter Break!
Mr. Clemente

Hi Band!
Exhausting, but good day yesterday with two parades! Great job, band .. you all looked and sounded like a wonderful holiday party! And thanks to the day’s chaperones .. we got our steps in yesterday for sure!
A couple reminders for this week ..
- please bring a plate of cookies / brownies / treats to share to THURSDAY’s Winter Concert for the post-concert reception in the auditorium lobby!
- We still need chaperones for what will REALLY (I promise, this time!) be the year’s last bout of stand tunes for a special event All-Star game at Showalter on Thursday evening, December 15th. Please sign up to chaperone just ONE. MORE. TIME .. here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fadab22aa8-football
- We also need one more chaperone for a field trip to a performance of the US Army Jazz Ambassadors at Dr. Phillips High School on Monday, January 9 from 9:15 am – 1:00 pm. Sign up here for that as well: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fadab22aa8-football
- And tomorrow evening (MONDAY, Dec. 5), parents able to help with large-donor fundraising for the New York / Carnegie Hall trip will meet … please join us to help organize our solicitation effort at 7 pm in the Band Room.
The parades have happened, so the holidays are allowed to arrive! Have a great week, Band .. see you all on Thursday!

DOOR-2-DOOR DRIVER SIGN UP AVAILABLE
Door 2 Door - our biggest and most important fundraiser of the year is coming Saturday, February 4th, and the day will arrive faster than we’d all like to think! To make this fundraiser possible, we need parent drivers!
How does it work?
Each parent is given a carefully crafted map to drive, based on previous years results. We try to keep you close to your home, if possible. Each driver takes 4 kiddos in their uniforms to walk the part of the neighborhood on your map and collect money door-to-door. The students split up into groups of two and each group takes a side of the street. You are able to stay in your car and move along with them or get out and walk. You and your group return for lunch and to change groups with a new map for the afternoon.
This is a tradition for the Sound of the Wildcats and many neighbors expect our arrival, as we do it the same Saturday every year. We also have special permission from the City of Winter Park, so our kids are safe.
For all students, the fundraiser puts money directly into their band accounts! For any parents that sign up to drive, your child will receive an additional portion of the proceeds that will go directly into their account.
What you need to do:
For every driver that signs up I need 3 things:
1. Copy of driver's license
2. Copy of insurance card that will be valid at time of D2D. If it’s renewing between now and February, wait to send me the updated info, but send me an email letting me know that.
3. A screenshot of your active/approved Additions status.
It may seem like there’s plenty of time, but I need to have this information collected over Winter Break and we will all be so busy with the holidays, it’s helpful if you can sign up now and send me the info as soon as possible. Heather Ribaric, our map organizer extraordinaire, will begin doing her magic with all those maps by the first week of January.
The links for Additions and Sign-up Genius are below:

Here is the Sign-Up Genius Link:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0A4FADAB22AA8-doortodoor
If you're signed up on Additions, but not finding that Additions page you need for your screenshot, here is the link and instructions to find your status:
https://ocps.samaritan.com/custom/503/volunteer_home
1. sign in (yep- you've got to remember that login info!)
2. If you do this on your computer, your picture and active status will pop right up. Take a picture and send that to me.
3. If you do this on your phone: once you sign In, it will say, "Welcome (your name)", scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says "more" and click on that. The next screen should show your picture and say "active". That's the page I need a screenshot of.
And I also need the driver's license and insurance card showing a date that's valid at the time of D2D in February
Remember, please only sign up if you are able to drive, however, we certainly understand sometimes there are unforeseen circumstances. We will be driving four kids for each car.
Please note that the sign ups are from 8-5. The sign ups are created like that because accommodating 1/2 day is very challenging to schedule. If you are unable to do all day, but can do 1/2 day, please let us know. We will put you on hold and see what our need is closer to February.
Warm regards,
Robyn Fodor

SOLO & ENSEMBLE MPA - Registration Due TOMORROW, 12/5!
As we continue into the 2nd marking period of the school year, it's time to begin finalizing selections for the annual Solo and Ensemble MPA. As a reminder from our Band Handbook, Solo and Ensemble is a part of our 2nd - 3rd quarter project for all students in the Winter Park Band - wind players, percussionists, and color guard. This project allows our students to have a performance opportunity where they are able to showcase their individual musicianship and take what they are learning in their Band classes and apply it toward a piece of music of their own choosing. It is my firm belief that preparing a piece for performance either individually or in a small group is one of the most effective ways for our students to add to their musicianship. Students' work performing solos and multiple events for Solo & Ensemble MPA is also taken into consideration with ensemble auditions for the upcoming school year. As the saying goes, a rising tide raises all boats, and when all students work to improve their individual musicianship, the Band program benefits as a whole.
Band students have two performance options to complete the Solo and Ensemble project:
- Option 1: Solo and Ensemble MPA. Solo and Ensemble MPA takes place each year at the beginning of February and is hosted by a school in our district, this year Horizon HS on February 10 and 11. This event is put on by the Florida Bandmasters Association(FBA), and allows students to perform for an adjudicator for a rating. Adjudicators for this event are professors, teachers, and performers from across the state of Florida, and students have the opportunity to receive feedback on their performance from someone who is an expert on their instrument. Students perform either a solo or chamber ensemble piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and may perform in up to 4 different events. The Band program pays for the event registration for all participating students.
- Option 2: Solo and Ensemble Recital Option. For students who choose not to perform at the Solo and Ensemble MPA put on by FBA, those students will perform as part of our Solo and Ensemble Recital at school. This year, that recital will take place in the Band Room on Wednesday, February 5, beginning at 1:30 PM. Students must select a piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and the performances will be adjudicated by both Mr. Smith and Mr. Clemente. Ms. Young would adjudicate color guard solos.
The next step is choosing which option you prefer and what piece(s) you will perform. Start looking at solo literature, consult your private lesson teacher, and/or get your chamber ensemble together and committed to performing as a group. Once you are prepared to register for either Solo and Ensemble MPA or the Solo and Ensemble Recital Option, follow the links below. If a student chooses to play a solo, they are responsible for providing a piano accompanist. If you are in search of an accompanist, please consult this list of piano accompanists on the Band website.

Solo and Ensemble Recital Option Sign-up

Students should have a close, if not final idea of what they would like to perform at Solo & Ensemble now after the Thanksgiving break. If a student plans on performing a solo that has piano accompaniment, that student should secure an accompanist before we leave for Winter Break.
