INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE FAIR
This year 60+ CHS World Language Students went to ASU (Tempe) to participate in the International Language Fair dedicated to showcasing various cultures, foods, dances, and traditions. This fair is an excellent way to engage high school students in expanding their global appreciation and knowledge. Each year 2000+ Arizona students attend this event.
The 2017 fair showcased fashion from the cultures students are studying. Be it clothing or jewelry, modern or traditional dress, all aspects of fashion were presented. Our very own CHS Spanish 3H students got to participate in the fashion showcase.
Also, students competed in the language fair in various categories based on their levels. This year we had students competing in Novice Recitation and Known or Created Play categories. CHS’s Spanish Caminos Literarios, German AP/IB, French 2 and French AP/IB students got a chance to showcase their linguistic talents in front of a panel of judges. Competition results will be known after Spring Break.

WEIBERFASTNACHT
CHS German classes and the German Club, taught by Mrs. Melanie Mello, recognized a carnival tradition in Germany that is called Weiberfasching last week. On Weiberfasching, women walked around the city and cut of ties as a sign of their emancipation. This tradition goes back to 1824 when women in the Bonn area decided that it was time for them to participate in the male dominated carnival festivities. It is practiced on the Thursday right before Rosenmontag. This year it fell on February 23rd. German students walked around campus on Thursday and cut off ties of participating men. The German Club even provided ties.

We are following the same criteria and process established by CHS’s Site Council, Teacher Leadership Team, and the Parent Advisory Council. Nominations will be taken through March 29th. The CHS TOY criteria aligns with the Arizona Educational Foundation’s (AEF) Teacher of the Year criteria, and ultimately, the CHS TOY will submit the AEF TOY application to be in the running for Arizona Teacher of the Year. Ms. Lori Lyford, CHS Choir Director, was named an Arizona Top 5 Teacher/Ambassador of Excellence, through the 2016 process.
If you would like to recognize a staff member who does not meet all of the criteria, please do so. Although he/she will not be in the running for AEF Teacher of the Year, CHS wants to acknowledge him/her.
