Winter Weather
Winter weather is here. Our school policy is to go outside for recess any time the temperature, including wind chill, is 10 degrees or higher as stated in our handbook (p. 21). Please make sure your child is properly dressed for the weather. Hats, mittens, boots, snow pants, and a warm coat are all needed for the colder weather. Parents will be notified if we feel their child is inappropriately dressed for the weather conditions. Administrative discretion may deem that the weather or playground conditions at an individual school require students to stay indoors for recess. It is important that our children have the ability to run around and get some exercise. Weather will be checked prior to each recess to verify the wind chill.
District Information: E-Learning Days for "Snow Days"
While students, staff and families have been engaged in full remote learning, we all know there is no substitute for in-person learning. We also know that the winter weather in the Midwest can be somewhat of a hindrance when traveling to and from school. In the future, when in-person learning is scheduled whether it is A/B days or “back to normal”, using an e-learning day will be considered should there be inclement weather.
Since Sandwich CUSD #430 is now 1:1 and students and staff are familiar with remote learning, please be prepared, on a daily basis, to shift to e-learning on so-called “snow days”. Please note, this will require everyone taking the responsibility of having their school issued personal device available for use at all times. Unlike previous years, e-learning days do not need to be made up at the end of the school year. Once decided, e-learning days will be communicated via the district webpage and school messenger.
Reminder: Student Certification Slips are back on the 19th!
ISBE/IDPH is requiring parents to complete a symptom and temperature check for their student(s) before a student(s) will be able to enter our school building. In an effort to maximize our learning time each day, we are asking you to complete this process at home prior to sending your student to school or onto a school bus. At this point in time, the plan is to provide families with forms to fill out to send with their student(s) to school for each in-person learning day. **Please note that this is an ever-changing process and is subject to change**
- If a child arrives at a bus or school without a filled out parent signed form, a district employee will have to complete this process prior to that student being allowed onto a bus or into a building.
- If a student's temperature is above 100.4, and/or a student reports a symptom(s) they will have to be picked up from school. This will also apply to any siblings that live within the same household.
- When you complete your screening at home, and your student(s) has a temperature above 100.4 or reports symptoms to you, your student(s) will need to remain home. You will need to notify the school if this happens.
- Below is a link to the form that will need to be filled out each day your student attends school.
- In front of Haskin, you will find a storage tub with copies of forms. If you are not able to print please stop by and pick up a packet of forms.
- We will continue to distribute these forms throughout the school year.
- Click the link below to access a printable document with certification slips.

Remote Learning Attendance Reminder
- We recognize the difficulties that remote learning has created at home, and we empathize with the struggles that the COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause. Please know that we are focused on progressing student learning during this time to the greatest extent possible and want our students to be prepared to return to blended learning. Therefore, it is paramount for students to keep up with their learning expectations each day. If you are experiencing challenges, we want to support you in any way that we can. If you are having internet/technology issues, please call the school, email your student(s) teacher, or fill out a tech ticket at https://bit.ly/3hCMxKH. Please reach out for help whenever necessary!
- Completion of Seesaw/Google Classroom activities is a requirement for a student to earn participation credit.
- Ideally, attending virtual meetings, combined with completing work on your student's digital platform, will earn attendance and participation. Our staff has worked diligently to create scheduled Zoom meetings based on students' specific needs/groups. We understand that the virtual meetings are a challenge at times; however, when possible, please prioritize these meetings in addition to the required daily activities.
Remote Learning Attendance Expectations:
Attendance during our adaptive pause will be monitored closely. Students will be required to fulfill a daily attendance form within the times provided by each building (for example 7:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.). For students in Kindergarten through second grade, this requirement will be completed through a Seesaw activity. Students in grades three through twelve will fulfill their attendance requirements through Google Classroom. Per the Illinois State Board of Education, there is a minimum of a five hour day required for remote learning. This includes: student work time, viewing pre-recorded lessons, web-based and non-web-based skill practice, etc. Students will be expected to complete daily work and turn in assignments as they are assigned. If your student is not able to participate in learning due to illness or a family circumstance, this must be communicated to our secretaries in a timely manner. They can be reached at 815-786-8812, or you can email Mrs. Kellogg at lkellogg@sandwich430.org. If we do not hear from you and work is not completed, then your student will be marked as an unexcused absence. Unless already being monitored for truancy, each school year students receive 7 unexcused absences as cited in our student handbook.
