Ahoy 3rd Grade Families,
Happy December!
I enjoyed virtually meeting face-to-face for conferences. It is truly a partnership we forge in helping your child have the best possible school experience. I appreciate the communication and gaining more insight into your child through our discussions
.
Thank you!In our Fundations routine this week we practiced the spelling options using vowel teams for long E [ee, ea, ey]. Students learned 3 new Trick Words: breakfast, head, and ready. We also reviewed syllables, and how to combine them to create multisyllabic words in our reading and writing.
During our literacy routine this week, students continued using Lexia and ReadWorks. Lexia is an adaptive blended learning program that accelerates the development of literacy skills for students of all abilities, helping them make that critical shift from learning to read to reading to learn. ReadWorks is a platform driven by cognitive science and thoughtfully designed to provide differentiated high-impact instruction that builds better readers. Students viewed/listened to When Will it Snow? by Marty Crisp. Ask your child how the main character is the complete opposite of me! We also spent time with our "good fit" books for Read to Self.
During Writer's Workshop students learned how to access google slide activities in our Google Classroom. Our focus is on editing skills. Students were given sentences and short stories with errors. They had to type it with the necessary corrections, such as proper capitalization, punctuation, and spelling, to complete the assignments.
We continued our read-aloud chapter book, Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism by Georgia Byng. Through read-aloud time I model what good readers are thinking and doing while spending time with text. Molly has discovered the "Hypnotism" book in the Briersville Library. Ask your child what she did with it, and how they feel about it! For more information about the story, please visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molly_Moon%27s_Incredible_Book_of_Hypnotism
In math we learned how to use Khan Academy in our Google Classroom. Students are completing assignments which reinforce and support our graphing unit (pictographs, bar graphs, and line plots). Students are also working on unfinished practice pages from this unit.
In social studies we began our unit about Massachusetts. Students learned our state bird, the state flag, and the 2 nicknames for Massachusetts [black-capped chickadee, "The Bay State" & "The Pilgrim State"]. We studied a map of New England and identified the 6 states in this northeast region [Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut]. Students used the map key to locate our capital city of Boston, as well as identify the rivers and Mount Greylock(the highest point in our state) in the Berkshire Hills. We noticed the Cape Cod area looks like a flexed arm extending in the Atlantic Ocean! We learned about and located Massachusetts Bay, Cape Cod Bay, and Buzzards Bay.
During science we continued exploring magnets. Students identified and sorted materials that were magnetic and nonmagnetic, and explained why.
Please remember you and your child can always access our Google Classroom to review materials and strengthen the home/school connection.
KIND REMINDER: If you need to change your child's dismissal plan, please send in a WRITTEN NOTE including my name (Mrs. McPhail), the date, your child's name, and a brief description of the plan. Please do NOT email me with the change during the school day for that afternoon. I cannot guarantee I will see the email because I'm teaching/working with your children/not near my computer, or there could be a problem with the technology system in the building on any given day. The SAFEST, BEST WAY is to always send a note with your child.
Until next week....BON VOYAGE!

A Message from Team 2 About Grading
In an effort to help parents understand our grading scale, we are sharing this information.
Our report card Grading Scale explained:
4 The student exceeds the grade level standard
During the first term, you will not likely see this score...it is indicative of children who are working independently ABOVE our grade 2 curriculum guidelines and standards. At this point in the year we are enriching horizontally within our grade level expectations.
3 The student meets the grade level standard
This score is given to students who have independently mastered the objectives of the standard and are not requiring support or reminders of any kind.
2 The student is developing skills needed to meet grade level expectations
This is a score that you would expect to see during the first term. Students are demonstrating mastery with support, reteaching, and ample opportunities to practice. That support might be Title 1, teacher lead small group personalized redirection, or para support.
1 The student does not meet the grade level standard and needs to make improvements
This score indicates that the student is experiencing much difficulty within the objectives of the standard. It may also indicate that the student is not working within the grade level guidelines/expectations
NA The standard is not evaluated
Please understand that as a Grade Level Team we work to communicate clear expectations and consistently monitor progress with an emphasis on improvement and mastery by the end of the year.
Preschool News
Dear Families and Friends,
Welcome back. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break!
This week we begin a new unit – Boxes Study. Children are always fascinated by boxes (sometimes even more than what comes inside the box!) and this study builds on that fascination and allows for a lot of creativity! This week we will be focusing on what we can do with boxes, their characteristics, what jobs involve boxes, and how they are made. We will be using our imaginations a lot this week – and we will be learning about the 3-D shapes: cube, sphere, cone, and cylinder.
.
Some whole group activities include: review of letters/letter sounds learned so far this school year, "pass the sphere" relay, ice cube melting experiment, and play an imagination game (It's not a box, it's a ...").
