Students striving for change
These students are members of the Youth Civic Engagement Research (YCER) Project at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, which involves students from Philadelphia, across the U.S. and Southern Africa. Organized by Dr. Vivian Gadsden, YCER's Director and Professor of Education, the Youth Summit is an annual event supporting youth researchers and scholars committed to making a positive difference in and for their communities.

Hershey's Heartwarming Project Action Grant
This Fall Ms. Jones' 10th grade health class completed research projects with the goal to create mental health awareness and empathy in school. Shortly after the projects were completed, School Counselor Ms. Marcus shared a grant opportunity that could bring these service projects to life. Sophomores Hala Alhuraibi, Sylvia Erdely and Jianwei Li won $250 from Hershey's Heartwarming Project Action Grant to implement their mental health service project. They plan on creating mental health awareness T-shirts to share with their health class to promote the cause.
Middle School Diversity Conference
Some of our 7th and 8th grade students attended the Middle School Diversity Conference held virtually at the Haverford School on March 11. The Keynote Speaker was Mr. Nyle Fort (photo below) who held a talk entitled "Then is Now: Talking about Pathways to Racial Justice."
Mr. Nyle Fort is a minister, activist and scholar based in Newark, NJ. He has worked in education, criminal justice and youth development for over a decade in various capacities including as the National Director of Communities Against Militarized Police; Founder and Co-Director of the Organizing Praxis Lab at Princeton University; and Lead Trainer at Momentum, an activist incubator that builds large-scale social movements in the United States and around the world. His activism involves local, national and international efforts.

On March 19 Masterman alumna April Peters shared an interactive presentation with our 7th and 8th-grade students. April Peters is a French Teacher and the author and developer of Landing On Purpose, a lifestyle method which provides individuals with the means to develop a mission-minded life. The theme of her presentation entitled "There is Significance in the Small” was seeing the value in their everyday actions.
Noor Rana is Senior of the Month!
Congratulations to Masterman Senior Noor Rana for winning the District's Senior of the Month for March! She will be profiled on the SDP website, given a monetary award and honored publicly at the end of year School Board meeting. We are so very proud of her! Thank you to Ms. Marcus for nominating Noor and sharing her accomplishments with the District.
