The Weekly Roar
January 21, 2019
TUTORING BEGINS TOMORROW: 1/22/19
If your child purchases breakfast from the cafeteria, please have them go there first, get their breakfast, and bring it down to the room. If your child wants to bring their breakfast from home, that is ok too. It is important to have them to school as close to 7:00am as possible in order for them to get the full benefit of the tutoring session. Tutoring ends at 7:30(35), so if they show up at 7:25, that doesn't give much time to go over the lesson.
Monday and Wednesday (Math) -7:00am - Mrs. Schluter's room
Tuesday and Thursday (Reading) - 7:00am - Mrs. Blackman's room
Friday - 7:00am (Both) - Open. We will help students on this day with any subject we feel necessary or they feel they need help in.
Live History Museum!
We will be presenting a Live History Museum on May 21st! This will be your student’s last presentation as a 5th grader. It counts as a major grade for 6 subjects: Social Studies, Reading, Writing, Art, Theater and Tech.
Here are some details about their project and materials needed:
- ****Each student will need to purchase 1 Tri-Fold Display Board-36 in. x 48 in. (Can be found at Wal-Mart, Target, Hobby Lobby, Walgreens, $ Store, etc.)
- Printed pictures, facts, titles, etc.
- A short speech about their person that they have to memorize. (This short speech does not need to include everything on the tri-fold. The board is to display all of their facts and pictures, and the short speech is a quick look at their person.)
What they will be graded on:
- They need to have a minimum of 10 pictures of their person and or pictures of their work, i.e., pictures of books they’ve written, or art work, etc. They are not to draw these items, they must be typed/printed. Color pictures are acceptable but NOT required
- Tri-fold to include: date of birth, date of death if applicable, place of birth, their major achievements or accomplishments, famous quotes if applicable, childhood, family life, education (where and when) and pictures
- Dress as the person they have chosen from history. They do NOT need to buy a costume or outfit. I’ve told them to get creative. Borrow clothes from parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. They can also make things in our room if need be. If you choose to buy something for your child that is up to you. I do not have a problem with that, but it is not required.
- Speech is memorized
- Creativity
- Neatness
- Information is clear to the reader and easy to follow
Other items they can add if they wish. (Just a few ideas):
- Fun facts about their person.
- Personal reasons why they chose to do their project on this person.
Items I will supply:
- Construction paper
- Card Stock
- Scissors
- Glue
- Markers
- Crayons
- Map Pencils
The project is due May 21st! In total, they will have had FOUR MONTHS to work on this project. They will have time in class to work on it, but most of the work should be done outside of school.
We have talked about this at length, and I have shown them examples of what I am expecting their boards to look like. The “live” part is the fun part! We will be setting up in the cafe on May 21st, and they will be bringing their person to life. They get to decide what activates them. It could be a button that people push. Maybe they will have us hop on one foot three times and then clap once; it will be their choice. Once they have been activated, they will begin speaking as the people they have chosen, introducing themselves and giving a short background on them. Once they shut off, people can move on to the next person while they wait to be activated again. They will not be taking questions or interacting with those of us at the “museum.” They will simply say what they need to and then shut off.
The students were able to pick anyone in history, with my approval. Everyone has a history! Here is a look at some of the people you will see there: Bruno Mars, Johnny Cash, Cristiano Ronaldo, Herman Seele, Tom Hanks, Coretta Scott King, Bethany Hamilton, Ellen DeGeneres, Lane Frost, and that’s just to name a few. In the past this has been a favorite of the 5th graders and myself, and I am very excited to see what they put together!
When: Tuesday, May 21st:
- Times TBA
Where: Seele Cafe
You are welcome to come and see both classes. I didn’t let them duplicate anyone, so you should be seeing different people from history throughout the museum. After the families preview the museum, we will begin welcoming different grade levels from our school to walk through.
We can’t wait to see you there!

- We will continue working on our fREADom reading.
- We will continue to work on summarizing using GIST and checking our comprehension by using Author’s Portrait.
- We will continue to practice our choral reading. This is a great way to help with fluency. We read a paragraph together out loud as a class at a pace that I set. The more we practice this, the faster we will get and the more fluent we will become. The kids really have fun doing this!
- Reading Vocabulary Words/Phrases: textual evidence, understanding, compare & contrast, graphics, organizational pattern, cause & effect, genre, overview, sequential order, text features (We are in review. These should look familiar.)
- Reading Vocabulary Quiz: Thursday, January 24, 2019
- Your child should continue reading nightly for 20 minutes and then getting their reading log initialed.
Social Studies:
- The Smore presentations over Thomas Paine and Common Sense, were so good! Many of the groups went over and beyond what I asked of them by presenting skits and or a rap to go with their presentation. Well done!
- We will be moving into the the events that led us to the Revolutionary War, the results and how the U.S. Military was formed. We will be discussing how Britain had a well trained army, while the other side was made up mostly of farmers or ordinary, untrained citizens. Which side will fight harder? Which side has more to lose?
Black History Month Projects
Each student has chosen someone to research from the African American community, and they will present their poster board on or before Thursday, January 31st. Each student was handed a sheet, last week, with very detailed instructions about the project, and we are well under way in class with our research, typing, printing, and picture gathering!
