Parent Technology Classes
We are excited to offer Parent Technology Classes once per month that will teach technology tools to help you and your student be more successful at Kennedy. The topic of the first class will be School Communication Tools. This includes, but is not limited to: PowerSchool, The RCSD App, Google Classroom, Google Translate, Gmail, and Tips For Emailing With Your Student’s Teacher.
*The first class is Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 8:30-9:30 am in Room 531.
The day of the week, time, and location will remain the same throughout the year. Other class dates for the year are: November 14, December 19, January 16, February 20, March 20, April 17, and May 15.
If you are unable to attend the classes, we are working on creating a Google Classroom to post resources that you can view from home.
Star Reading Scores
One of the reading assessments that we use in the Redwood City School District to determine student reading levels is the Renaissance Star Reading assessment. The Assessment is given on the computer four times per year (September, November, February, and May). It tests reading comprehension and vocabulary. I have asked teachers to input students’ September (baseline) scaled score into PowerSchool so that you have an idea of your student’s reading level according to this specific assessment. The score does not count towards their grade. This is being input in PowerSchool so you can easily access the score. (The November score is printed on the report card). The scaled score is calculated based on the difficulty of questions in a student’s test and the number of correct responses. Scaled scores range from 0-1400 and can be used to compare student performance over time and across grade levels.
Keep in mind that this is just one type of assessment we will be giving this year. So you will get other data and reading information this year. We need your help to encourage students to try their best and take their time. We know many of the students can do a lot better.
Below is the a chart of scores. For the September score you need to use the “Beginning” column. For example, a sixth grader who is reading at grade level should score at least a 691 on the first assessment.
