Valentines Day
The Holiday
As many know Valentines day is a day to show your girlfriends and boyfriends that you love them and want to make them happy. This holiday is focused on showering your girlfriends or wives in chocolates, flowers, romantic cards, and willingly sitting through a Nicholas sparks film. For others it's just another reminder that they're single and an excuse to eat ice cream out of the tub while sitting in piles of tears as they watch Noah tell Allie that he wrote her 365 letters trying to get hold of her.
The History
So where did we get the strange idea to give people chocolates, teddy bears and flowers on February 14th? Well this day of romance is named for Christian Martyr, and dates all the way back to the 5th century. It roots back to the ancient Roman festival Lupercalia which was celebrated on February 15th but the Pope changed the pagan festival to be a Christian feast day which we now celebrate on February 14th and know as St. Valentines day. To this day it is still a mystery which St. Valentine the holiday was named after but it is said that all three St. valentine's were married on February 14th.

The History
Created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official holiday in 1914. This celebration usually lands on the second Sunday in May and involves giving mothers flowers, cards, and gifts. This holiday can be traced back Greeks and Romans who would have festivals to celebrate the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. Popular customs include decorating Christmas Trees, attending Church, hanging up lights, giving gifts, etc. The holiday started off as a pagan holiday but in the fourteenth century Christians decided to make Christmas the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
