New Athletic Protocols adopted
December 18, 2020
Garfield Re-2 Families:
We appreciate your patience while our administrative staff and athletic directors have been working to develop guidance for off-season open gyms and workouts.
The Colorado High School Activities Association does allow for open gyms/workouts over break if they are open to all students, voluntary, and not a condition for making the official team. As counties transition into orange and red COVID levels, CHSAA advises school districts to work with county health officials and district administrators to provide plans that work within the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s capacity and participation limitations.
The Washboard Union Makes Spirits Bright in Garfield Re-2
This band has a song, "Shine," that has been used in many schools as a theme song, and the band members answered an email from Cactus Valley Elementary Assistant Principal Simone Richardson and agreed to engage with their fans. The video below includes some of their music, and some great interactions with the staff and students of Cactus Valley Elementary.
What an inspirational song, and what an amazing gift to end the first semester with.

CVE's Jennetta Howell named a Most Valuable Teacher for the Fall 2020 Semester
Congratulations to Mrs. Howell.
The Denver Broncos teamed up with Delta Dental of Colorado to launch Touchdowns for Teachers, a program that recognizes local educators for outstanding service to their schools and communities. The nomination form was open to the public and ten honorees were selected to represent the Fall 2020 Cohort.
Honorees were selected by a panel of Denver Broncos and Delta Dental of Colorado representatives.
Honorees were chosen based on amount of involvement in the school and/or community, degree of positive impact on the school and/or community, commitment to education in the school and/or community and extraordinary efforts to educate, inspire and encourage their students.
Congratulations Joseph Thompson
Coal Ridge senior Joseph Thompson has been recognized as a College Board Rural and Small Town Scholar.
The College Board National Recognition Programs grant students academic honors that can be included on college applications. Colleges use these honors to identify students from underrepresented groups who have excelled on their PSAT/NMSQT and in their classrooms.
To qualify for the honor, students must:
- Take the PSAT/NMSQT® in October of their junior year.
- Achieve the minimum requested PSAT/NMSQT scores (qualifying level may vary by state each year).
- Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher by the middle of their junior year
Congratulations Joseph.
