History of Reading Football Club.
Championship Title 2005/06
Reading were promoted to the Premiership in 2005/06 for the very first time in 135 years. They were champions in May by 106 points and they’re still the point leaders for the championship today.
Reading Football Club has been around since 25th December 1871 and they call themselves The Royals.
Reading played at Elm Park for 102 years, between 1896 and 1998, then Sir John Madejski, who brought the club back in 1990 designed a new stadium and moved in 1998, calling it Madejski Stadium after his name.
Reading had a fantastic season in 2006/07 finishing 8th in the Premiership table by 55 points through 38 matches.
In 2007/08 they started the season playing Manchester United with the score of 0-0. As the season went by, things turned horrible and Reading were getting bad results from January to February in 2008.
On the last day of the season Reading had to play against Derby County, which they needed to win to stay in the Premier League; but unfortunately they also needed Fulham to lose their game to stay in the Premier League. In the 90th minute of the Fulham v Portsmouth game, Fulham had scored making it 1-0 putting Reading 18th place in the table, due to goal difference. This meant Reading went back to the Championship after 2 years of staying in the Premier League.
Reading started the new season well and finished in the playoff places playing against Burnley in the semi-finals which they got knocked out of after a 0-3 aggregate at the Madejski Stadium.
Between 2009/11 they were still in the Championship until they played against Cardiff for the playoff semi-finals. Reading went to Wembley Stadium after 3-0 victory against Cardiff, so Reading were in the playoff finals against Swansea City but unfortunately they got smashed losing 2-4 at Wembley play off finals.
In 2011/12 Reading had the worst start and were 19th in the Championship at Christmas and then all the sudden in April they were promoted to the Premier League and became Champions again for the second time running in history.
In 2012/13 they were in the Premier League for the 3rd time running after being champions and being promoted from the championship from the last season.
The season didn’t go to plan and everything went to pot up which meant they had to sack Brian McDermott and get Nigel Adkins to replace him for the rest of the season.
Reading got relegated and returned to the championship after 1 year of staying in the premier league.
Reading were back in form in the summer and concentrated on the new season which they did well in and ended up 7th place in the championship table for 2013/14 season.
2014/15 was a very tough season as things were not good because the club lost good players and brought youngsters from under 21s into the first team. The highlight of the season was going to Wembley of the FA Cup semi-finals against Arsenal in April 2015.
