2015 - 2016 Third Grade Weekly News

Please, encourage your child to wear and bring warm clothes to school. We are going to see single digit degrees soon. We like to take the kids outside for recess as often as possible and will likely go outside until the temperature drops below 10 degrees.

Coming Up!

  • Math: We are moving along in our newest Multiplication/Division unit. This week, we've studied the Partial Products Algorithm and how to use multiplication and division strategies in word problems.
  • Reading: As we enter our first week of ISTEP, we practiced several techniques on good test taking strategies. We finished our read-aloud Out of My Mind and we did a few concluding activities on character traits.
  • Grammar: Subject-Verb Agreement and Tenses.
  • Science: We brain stormed ideas for sound travel, and we will be putting those ideas into action this week. What substances can sound move through?

This week we will practice the formats of the test getting familiar with the layout, but we will not spend every moment in test preparation. Don’t worry – we will pace ourselves these next couple of weeks. If you’re wondering how you might be able to help your third grader deal with the ISTEP, mention the following tips to your student: 1) Don’t stress 2) Eat right 3) Don’t stress 4) Sleep well 5) Don’t stress and finally, did I mention? 6) Don’t stress. Seriously, let’s remember this is an important opportunity for your student to show what he/she knows. Also, let’s remember it’s one of many ways that we evaluate progress and academic mastery as well as share success and the joys of learning. With that in mind, here’s the schedule:

  • This week, Feb. 22-26 - test prep
  • Tuesday, March 1 – Testing in AM
  • Wednesday, March 2 – Testing in AM
  • Thursday, March 3 – Testing in AM

ISTEP Snacks:

Please send your child with a snack all three testing days. After each session, it is nice for each child to have a refueling snack and a moment to socialize with his/her friends before we continue with the day's schedule.

Please do not schedule doctor appointments during these times. Please make sure your student arrives to school on time. Please make sure your student has a good breakfast. Please make sure your student gets plenty of sleep and rest. You might even consider getting your kiddo home a little bit earlier from that sports practice or evening activity to get him/her in bed a little bit earlier. Thank you so much for your cooperation and support.
