reminder: No school on friday
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LAMBERT
Dear Parents
If you have been to the school lately, you have probably noticed that the portables are all here! The next step is to connect electrical, internet, bathroom plumbing, etc. Teachers in Rooms 17 - 42 will be packing up their rooms and the moving company will move boxes and furniture over the December break. When students from Rooms 17-42 return in January they will begin in their new portable classroom. Construction of our new permanent school will finish in late spring 2018 and these portables will remain until our new school opens in August 2018.
On a different note, we have many opportunities for parents to be involved at Castro. There is a new opportunity for parents to attend a training that will be terrific in helping you to support your child in their education. FEI ( Family Engagement Institute by Foothill College) will be starting a 4 week parent workshop on Thursdays at Castro from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. with childcare and snacks provided. Please see the flyer in this Whistle for information on how to sign up. Don't miss this terrific opportunity!

project cornerstone Book: Blue day book for kids
Goals of lesson:
- Empower students to practice specific skills they can use to influence things that happen to them.
- View disappointment and sadness as temporary and fixable states.
- Act and switch directions so that the outcome of their day is changed.
- Name feelings and notice the feelings of others.
- Learn ways to accept and deal with feelings.
To reinforce this lesson at home:
· Model the behavior of positive self-talk and switching directions when you are in a blue mood
· Below are steps to help your child change how they feel when they want to get out of a blue mood:
1. Accept and name your feelings. For example, say to yourself, "I am sad." "I am scared."
2. Remind yourself that this feeling is temporary. You will feel happy again. Look to caring adults for support.
3. Relax and take a time out before you act. Take slow deep breaths and count to ten, relaxing all the muscles in your body. Get ready to choose the way you respond.
4. Think about ways to help move out of your mood. Use positive self-talk to make a plan.
When you “catch” kids modeling positive behaviors...
Notice, Name it, and Celebrate it!
