How powerful is advertising?

What is the point of advertising?

Ads have been around since the beginning of time and the objective is still the same. The whole point of an ad or commercial is to make you want to buy, think or do something for the people sending out that message.

Advertisements are all around us, but how do they influence our society?

The Super Bowl is the most watched event in the world besides the Olympics. It costs 4 million dollars to have a one minute commercial and only happens once a year. A clever and witty commercial is enough keep our attention and that is exactly what it's made for. Aside from just The Super Bowl everyday media covers us in a blanket of trends, inventions, and ideas. Ads show us tasty burgers, fancy clothes, and luxury cars and 8 times out of 10 they actually draw our attention. In our society it is important to be aware of the world around us and what better reminder is the media and it's messages. Along with wanting to buy something the media can make us think a certain way. Following the attack on the World Trade center; the media coverage toward Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden made people support the war on terrorism and show major patriotism. The media has the power to make people want to buy different clothes to fit in, go to certain stores, or even eat different things. The thought is actually frightening about much power the media has.

How a commercial makes us think

This commercial's emotion is simply funny and rowdy but is it more than that? This commercial primarily uses pathos which is why people thought it was so funny. People don't really welcome all advertisements with open arms, but when a witty one comes by it catches our attention. Doritos did an excellent job with this ad because they kept it short, kept their message short ( Doritos are delicious enough to ride a dog with a lasso for) and kept us awake through the whole thing.
