Message from Mr. Hanzeli
Hello Elger Bay Families!
This week was all about the Elger Bay BIG TOY :-) Several classes had their first opportunity in an extended recess to enjoy parts of the Big Toy. For those who missed it, here is the link to the "special edition" I put out announcing the opening of the Big Toy last Monday.
We are still bound by special guidelines that include masking, distancing, and limited numbers of students using the equipment at one time (two class cohorts). Still, I could tell from the children's voices there was much joy to having it back.
I do want you to know that when we designed the BIG TOY, it was done with our community in mind. For families that would like to bring their children to the toy, it is open to the public after 4:30 until dusk. On weekends it is available as well for children to play. You will find that there are 4 very nice bench areas to be able to relax and watch your children play and enjoy the wonderful equipment.
Safety and Erosion Note: Please reinforce for all of us that that the wall behind and the rock area just past the rubber are 'out of bounds' here at school. The rock on the rubber damages that surface, and the wall is not a safe climb area should a child slip and fall.
Thanks to everyone for helping take good care of this beautiful...and FUN...new element of our school.
- Mr. Hanzeli

Spring Break
SCSD Friday Family Message, 3.19.21 (Repeat)
Good Afternoon, Families:
Our intention to add time to our secondary student day is now supported by Governor Inslee’s recent proclamation. Additionally, the district has provided the opportunity for all of our staff to be vaccinated. By mid-April all of our staff will have had the opportunity to be fully vaccinated, if they so choose.
The Superintendent search is continuing. Thank you to all of our community members who have filled out the survey or participated in community forums. The position is posted and will be open to candidates until April 24. The board will then screen candidates to be interviewed in May.
School Sports Update
Student athletes are continuing to participate in sports. Our middle school students are participating in conditioning activities and our high school athletes are practicing and competing. Per the updated WIAA guidelines, spectators are now permitted to attend in limited numbers. Our athletic department is working on gym and stadium layouts that follow the social distancing guidelines. The intent is to allow a certain number of spectators per athlete at home contests. This number has not been determined yet. Athletes will provide spectators with a voucher containing the name of the athlete. Spectators will need to provide a phone number for potential contact tracing purposes if necessary. On the day of the contest, students may also obtain a voucher with priority given to seniors. The plan, which has not been finalized, is for them to pick up vouchers at the SHS Athletic Office.
Spectators will be required to follow all screening procedures, wear masks, and maintain social distance with individuals who do not live in their households. More details will be made available by the SHS Athletic Department in the coming days.
Important Dates
March 31-April 1 are early release days for our students for conferencing and staff professional development.
Student support for special populations is cancelled for March 31 due to all staff training.
Students will be on a half day schedule on April 1-2. Please watch your child(ren)’s school newsletter for more information.
Spring break will be April 5-9 (no school).
COVID Testing Coming Soon
We are excited to begin a partnership with Seattle Children’s Hospital and Research Institute to begin offering regular screening/testing for staff and for students participating in extracurricular activities. This will enable us to potentially identify COVID-19 in certain groups before they are even symptomatic. The hope is that this will prevent exposure to larger groups, and keep everyone safer. Even more exciting, after spring break we will be able to do PCR testing on staff and students who have any COVID-19 symptoms. This will enable us to do the confirmatory testing for which we previously would have had to send people out of district to a mobile site, clinic, or care provider. Now, with parent consent, our trained staff will be able to do the testing here to direct us in quarantining those who may be positive and return others to school without having to wait 2-4 days for test results. Seattle Children’s will be responsible for managing and reporting results to public health departments as required by law. If your child participates in athletics and/or activities at our high schools, your child will be eligible to participate in this voluntary surveillance testing program upon completion of a permission form. These forms will be distributed by your child(ren)’s school.
For our staff and high school students participating in athletics and activities, the District has engaged and will work collaboratively with Seattle Children’s Research Institute (Seattle Children’s) to perform COVID-19 testing. A Seattle Children’s lab will perform and oversee the testing using a designated testing team of trained individuals from Seattle Children’s and the District. The District will report results to parents and legal guardians of students. Seattle Children’s will be responsible for managing and reporting results to public health departments as required by law. Testing requires parent permission for children under the age of 18. If your child participates in athletics and/or activities at our high schools, your child will be eligible to participate in the testing program upon completion of a permission form. These forms will be distributed by your child(ren)’s school.
