Habit Focus of the Week: Habit 3: Put First Things First
This is the habit of personal management. It's where we first heard Dr. Covey share, "The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing!" In the highly effective paradigm, we spend time on what is most important. We:
- focus on our highest priorities.
- eliminate the unimportant.
- plan every week.
- and, stay true in the moment of choice.
It is so important to let those highly effective practices sink in. All too often we we operate in a paradigm where we focus on the urgent...which might not even be important. Are we managing crisis or other people's agendas? Are we trying to do all the things? Are we failing to plan?
"Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least."
Johann Goethe
Important: activities that represent your/our mission, roles, values, and high-priorities.
Urgent: activities that require immediate attention.
We want to make sure we are operating in quadrant 2...the quadrant of effectiveness...In order to do this, you have to identify what is improtant to you...what are your priorities? This is where I really encourage you to implement weekly planning! In my notes in the margins, I wrote:
"What are the 1-2 BIG things I get to do this week? Put these on your calnedar FIRST, and then schedule everything around those 1-2 BIG things. These are the IMPORTANT things for the week. You cannot be everything to everybody every week. However, you CAN make time for the big rocks every week!"
My BIG things this week...my important...supporting teachers as they finish one of the final weeks before state assessments and end of year assessments...be present and offer feedback...Now...it's time to PLAN for this FIRST!
Thinking about school...what are your 1-2 BIG things? What is the most important this week? Name it, claim it, plan for it!
If you plan 50-65% of your time, you will be 2-3 times more likely to get things done!
"Action expresses priorities"

Habit 2 and 3 Final Focus...A Career Day Plan
The Habit Huddle and Events Action Teams came together to begin planning this year's career pathways focus for our leaders. As a Lighthouse Team, it was determined that we wanted to alternate years where we had BIG career day/community leadership day events with career pathways and career awareness events. This year we will spend 2 weeks focusing on career pathways and career awareness. This is an awesome opportunity for your Habit Huddle, as the habit learning might be getting a little flat!
Week of May 6th:
- K-1 will learn about various careers
- 2-5 will research a job they are interested in and learn how they can put first things first. Each grade level will decide on what end product they want the kids to have.
- Friday students will be able to come to school dressed as a career of their choice. We will have a parade.
Jen Morales has some NISD career pathways information we can provide grade levels.

End of Year RtI Updates, Documentation, and Meetings:
RtI is part of our high functioning whirlwind.
STAAR Updates From Tanya:
- Training for all test adminsitrators will take place during 3-5 grade planning on Monday. If you are a test administrator, you need to choose one of these sessions to attend.
- Look for information from Tanya this week regarding STAAR testing next week.
- All halls and rooms need to be prepared for testing by the time you leave on Wednesday. 2-3 grade hall and 4-5 halls will be used for testing.
- Please share the information about STAAR testing and closed campus pictured below with your parents.
Campus and District Announcements and Updates:
Don't let spring fever set in...Duty assignments are made to ensure student safety at arrival and dismissal.
- Please make sure you are on time to your scheduled duty in the mornings. If you are going to be out, it is your responsibility to get coverage.
- Please remind students about Leader Expectations during dismissal. Staff must both model and hold students accountable to these expectations. These expectations are in place to ensure safe and efficient dismissal of all students.
- Save the Date for NISD 2019 - 2020 Professional Learning: The NISD PD calendar has been approved. I attached a document outlining the dates and other important PD information/requirements in the weekly update email. Please read carefully. We will discuss your PD plan for next year in summative conferences.
- Attendance Snapshot Time: Staff, it is imperative that attendance be completed DAILY at the 9:30 reporting time. Funding is connected to this reporting, and should the district/campus be audited, failure to report attendance at the snapshot time could result in loss of funding for all of the students in your classroom on each day that attendance was not completed at the reporting time. Please be advised that reporting attendance is connected to T-TESS discipline 4.

From the Librarian:
Please help your students look for and return library books. Check their backpacks, remind them to look all over their homes, in the classroom, browsing boxes, etc. Books turn up in crazy places. I would like to have all books turned in by Tuesday, May 21 then begin inventorying the library collection. That will help “find” a lot of books that we think are lost. Students can easily find out what book they have checked out, all they do is scan their barcode just like they do to check out books.. Beginning next week I will print papers for students with books still out. I can do that same for teachers/staff.
This week the library will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday for meetings and registration. I will also be off campus on Wednesday for my PLC..
Just because students are not checking out books anymore, I still want to see classes.. I can read to them, show book trailers for UBC books, you can bring your class for silent reading time, I can host small book clubs and much more.. Please let me know what I can do to support you and your students during this last month! Feel free to text me anytime to let me know you want to come to the library, or whatever else you need/want. 817-372-6774.
