The NPS Parent Newsletter
Message from Dr. Migliorino
Greetings NPS Parents,
There are only a couple days of school left and it has been a remarkable first semester, filled with amazing student achievements. I am so proud of all our students for all their hard work.
It's also an exciting time for the NPS bond. Our planning and design phase is well underway and you can now view the latest schematics and plans here. We will update our site frequently, so stay tuned for more exciting updates.
This time of year is also big for all our juniors and seniors as they make and finalize their plans for after graduation. Included in this month's newsletter you'll find lots of great resources so I hope you'll take the opportunity to read through some of the scholarship and career tech info included below as you and your student plan for those next steps in life.
I would also be remiss if I didn't say a heartfelt thank you to all our teachers and staff for all their tireless efforts over this first semester. Norman Public Schools is the great district it is in large part because we have the very best people working for our students day-in and day-out. I hope you'll join me in taking some time this week to reach out to your teachers to express your gratitude for their dedication and hard work.
Lastly, I know we are all excited for winter break, but this time of year can be a challenge for some. So I encourage you to pay close attention to those around you as this holiday season. If you see someone who might not be so excited, make an effort to reach out to them. Find ways to take care of your neighbor and spread a little cheer. There is joy in serving others, particularly at this time of year.
I wish you all a very happy and safe winter break. We can't wait to see you again in January!
Sincerely,
Dr. Nick Migliorino

Second semester ExpandED enrollment now open
The Norman Public School District is expanding educational opportunities to accommodate the growing needs of students and families. NPS ExpandED is an innovative pilot program designed to serve students who would benefit from a customized, virtual education solution.
While the district has offered online courses for more than a decade, the new program provides participating students with the flexibility to complete all of their coursework outside the traditional school building or blend their learning experience by attending some classes at school. NPS ExpandED students also have the unique opportunity to participate in on-site extracurricular activities, including 6A athletic teams and world-class fine arts programs.
The free, online education opportunity aligns with Oklahoma Academic Standards and offers a self-paced education option for K-12 students. Highly qualified, certified teachers will provide online instruction and work closely with students and parents to customize lessons as needed.
New enrollments for second semester are now open. Click below to complete an enrollment request form. After the form is submitted, NPS will contact you to discuss enrollment. You may also contact Dr. Dana Morris at 405-366-5844 to schedule an enrollment conference.

Vaping and Adolescents
As part of our commitment to students health, beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, Norman Public Schools has implemented a comprehensive education program aimed at preventing the use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices. The age-appropriate curriculum will be delivered to all students.
E-cigarettes are threatening to addict a new generation to nicotine. In fact, young people who use e-cigarettes are four times more likely to start smoking cigarettes than their peers who do not vape. E-cigarette use among youth - many of whom were not smokers in the first place - has skyrocketed in recent years. Nicotine is harmful to developing brains: younger users are more likely to become addicted, have more difficulty quitting and may be at higher risk for addiction to other substances in the future.
