This is your Captain Speaking!
Hello Birdneck Family,
I'm looking forward to another amazing week here at Birdneck. Encourage your students to join in our spirit week and wear the color of the day. We will begin the week wearing yellow for disability awareness. This week helps us to bring awareness but also helps to unify our community by illustrating a common purpose. Creating common goals and sharing a purpose in your classrooms and among your teammates will also help to bring our community together and in turn increase the likelihood of success for our students.
In the video below, Patrick Lencioni summarizes 5 Dysfunctions of a Team, the book we read 2 years ago as a staff, and reminds us that we need to focus on results by building trust, overcoming a fear of conflict, making commitments, and holding each other accountable to reach our goals.
Hats off to Mrs Hinson during Safe Schools Week. She does such a fabulous job of making sure that our building is safe and secure and greets all of us as we enter the building with a smile. Thanks for all you do, Mrs. Hinson!!!!

Safe Schools Week
This observance is also actively supported by local, state and national public officials and professional organizations. Virginia Beach City Public Schools will observe these dates to again highlight and reinforce school safety. In appreciation of their important contributions to school safety, Wednesday, Oct. 24, is designated as School Resource Officer and Security Assistant Day. (Officer Swartz and Mrs. Hinson)
Please help us to celebrate their hard work. To obtain additional information on America’s Safe Schools Week, please go to the National School Safety Center website, at http://www.schoolsafety.us/safe-schools-week.
You Make a Difference
Mrs. Hartman goes above and beyond for her students. She is a positive, loving teacher who always gives her students a fresh start each morning. Mrs. Hartman works tirelessly with co-teachers to provide each student an individual learning experience. She plans wonderful events for our families and makes Birdneck truly feel like a family. Thank you, Mrs. Hartman, for all you do for Birdneck students and our community. We know you make a difference each and every day!
Shout Outs!
If you would like to give a SHOUT OUT to a colleague, it is as simple as sending an email to RV to be added to our Shout Outs each week!
Great job to Gail Campbell in planning and implementing the STEM Paper Airplane Challenge! It would never get in the air (get it ;) ) without her!
Thank you, Joanne Coauette, for all that you do to help me implement individualized learning when teaching math. I know that not only are my students becoming better mathematicians, but I am also becoming a better instructor of mathematics.
· Shout out to Caitlin Green for handling a very heavy load of IEPs/meetings, new kiddos and speech therapy with efficiency, professionalism and a smile!
· Shout out to our 3 (semi) new special education teachers, Erica, Nikki & Krista, as they handle very complex cases for their first IEPs! J You’re all doing a fabulous job!
Compass to 2025
STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK
VBCPS is beginning the process to create our next strategic framework "Compass to 2025"
Our current five-year strategic framework includes four goals - high academic expectations, multiple pathways, social-emotional development, and culture of growth and excellence – and multiple strategies to guide this important work. Making a difference for every student, every day.
Compass to 2020 GOALS
1.High Academic Expectations- all students will be challenged and supported to achieve a high standard of academic performance and growth; gaps between these expectation and the realities for our student subgroups will be addressed
2.Multiple Pathways- all students will experience personalized learning opportunities to prepare them for post-secondary education, employment or military service
3.Social-Emotional Development- all students will benefit from an educational experience that fosters their social and emotional development.
4.Culture of Growth and Excellence- VBCPS will be defined by a culture of growth and excellence forstudents, staff, parents and the community.
Your input is requested. We will be discussing this in our staff meeting on Thursday afternoon.
Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
Multiple staff have family members, who have been struggling with health concerns recently. Please keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers.
Please keep the Gentry family in your thoughts and prayers with the loss of Susan's mother.
