Weekly update of our classroom happenings
Language Arts
Lots of things will be going on in our classroom this week! We will be revisiting some of the previously read chapters in Hatchet and writing summaries. We will also be utilizing literary devices to explore the setting within those chapters and reading a paired informational text that accompanies Hatchet quite nicely.
Students are getting close to wrapping up Hatchet, and will be examining the plot more closely in the coming weeks. We will have class discussions, activities, and many opportunities to collaborate with the purpose of gaining a deeper understanding of this book.
Science
- A- 85%-100% (10 in Powerschool)
- B- 74%-84% (9 in Powerschool)
- C- 63%-73% (8 in Powerschool)
- D- 53%-62% (7 in Powerschool)
- F- 0%-52% (6 in Powerschool)
If you look at your child's grade, there is a comment where you can see the percentage they scored out of 100%. They also know how to access this assessment on Canvas if you would like to see specific questions. Because this is a summative common assessment, there will not be retakes.
We are moving to a new unit this week! We will transition into our unit on Earth's systems and will begin with talking about our World's oceans and how currents are formed. Students will participate in a lab to explore and find evidence to reach a conclusion about why we have currents.

Social Studies
Students will continue learning about the religious beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians. They will apply their knowledge to a writing prompt. We will be learning about the geographic features of Ancient Egypt towards the end of the week.
Math
This week in General Math we are learning about Unit Rates and how these are found in everyday life. Students are realizing that understanding how to calculate unit rate can really help save them some money! :-) For instance, If you can get oranges at the supermarket for $4.99 for 4lbs or the Farmer's Marker for $11.99 for a 10 lb bag, which location has the better deal. They are learning to find the price per orange in order to be able to compare the items. Rates are found everywhere; being able to calculate unit rate is an important life skill.
In Honors Math, these students are learning to calculate percent. They are also finding out this is a very useful life skill as we are beginning to understand tax, tip, discounts, commissions, mark up/mark down, and even percent error.
I am enjoying getting to know your children. I am confident we are going to have a wonderful rest of the school year. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of their daily life!
