Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Responsible

Over the past three years, Corron has had schoolwide expectations of “Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Responsible”. We use these expectations within every component of our school day. Teachers anchor their morning meetings with them, our Specials teachers use them as a reminder of expectations within their classes, and staff use them to help students process choices that they make. Because of our intense focus on these expectations and what they look like, they are ingrained into everything we do at Corron. This work has created a positive climate and helps create teachable moments when students struggle to make positive choices.

Ask your child how they follow these expectations at school. My bet is that he or she will be able to provide examples and evidence of following all three of the Corron expectations!

Many parents have expressed concerns and frustrations about arrival and dismissal over the past few weeks. Winter weather can definitely throw a wrench into our procedures. More families drive because of weather conditions, and snow piles leave fewer parking spaces and less area for students to exit and enter their cars. We have tried to alleviate some of the challenges in the mornings by allowing students to enter the building 5 minutes early so that the line can start moving sooner. Staff continues to leave the center spaces empty for parents to easily park. Students are not being marked tardy if the line continues past 8:00. These efforts have helped in a challenging situation. Our line in the morning is typically gone by 8:05, and cars are loaded at the end of the day by 3:13 every day.

We now need support from our parent community. There have been many unsafe conditions during arrival and dismissal caused by cars not following our procedures and expectations. Cars are driving into oncoming traffic to get around others because they are in a hurry. The entrance to the parking lot has traffic coming from three different directions, which can cause some confusion. Add into this our families that use the crosswalk there and we have the potential for accidents.

Here are a few things that our families can do as we get 540 students in and out of our school each day:

• Please model patience in front of your children. We are all trying to get our students into the school. Everyone has somewhere to be. Our staff does our best each and every day to make things run smoothly and efficiently.

• If you park in the lot, you must walk your child through the crosswalk. Cars are pulling in and backing up continuously in the mornings - it can be impossible to see small children in this situation!

• Do not get out of your car in the drop-off/pick-up lane. It impedes the flow of traffic. If your child needs assistance getting out, please park.

• Some of our staff members' days end at 2:45. Often they get blocked in by cars parked in random spots in the parking lot. Please do not park your car in between the aisles.

• Most of all, please demonstrate kindness and respect for our staff members and for each other. Working together will create the most efficient and the safest procedures for all of our children.

Join us in spreading care and compassion during Random Acts of Kindness Week, February 14th-20th. Corron will be focused on making the world a little better, one small act of kindness at a time, in partnership with the organization Random Acts Matter. There is no better way to help your neighbor than to do something unexpected! This is the simple idea behind the formation of Random Acts Matter. You can find more information here.

We will “Paint Corron Orange” on Friday, February 18th. The color orange represents kindness as it combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. Therefore, all students are encouraged to wear orange to celebrate making a difference in the world!

Greetings, Parents and Guardians of students receiving special education services in District 303! We are moving our next SE-PAC meeting to Tuesday, February 15, 2022 (From February 1). The meeting will be held from 7:00-8:30 via Zoom. During our time together, we will review outcomes from the 2021-2022 parent survey and participate in shared learning on supporting students during transition meetings. Department administrators will share information on the transition process and gain your insights to support students as they move from Early Childhood to Elementary, Elementary to Middle, Middle to High, and High School to Post-Secondary programs. We are hopeful you can join us on February 15!

The School Board has approved an E-Learning plan that gives the district the option to offer remote learning in place of emergency days. Currently, our last day of school is Tuesday, May 24, which is the week before Memorial Day. As we move into the winter months, we want to update you on the plan for how the district will manage emergency days and e-learning days.

• If we experience inclement weather, the first three days will be “snow days” that will be made up at the end of the school year on May 25, 26, and 27 as needed.

• Subsequent emergency days will be remote days so the last attendance day will still be before Memorial Day.

• If there is a long stretch of inclement weather (blizzard, polar vortex, etc.), we may split the days into “snow days” and e-learning days so as to not have too many non-attendance days in a row.
