Wiley Weekly

September 19 - September 23

Dear UMAC Parents,

We're thrilled to begin our first week of guided reading and literacy stations this week! After lots of modeling and practicing, our students have demonstrated the ability to complete our literacy station tasks independently. We practiced on Thursday and Friday last week and everyone did a fabulous job!! These differentiated tasks will provide our students support as they grow as readers throughout the school year. We will be monitoring their work by collecting reading notebooks once a week. We will also be changing literacy station tasks as the year progresses. Please ask your child about their guided reading text and literacy stations this week!

As always, let us know if you have any questions!

Wanted: Class Party Donations

We're still looking for a few parents to donate items to our Winter Celebration and Valentine's Celebration. If you wouldn't mind sending in an item for either of these events, please email me and I'll let you know what items we still need. Thank you to those parents who already offered to help!

Traits Writing

Last week in writing students focused on the writing trait of ideas. We discussed ways to find a topic and how to create a strong idea that sends a clear message to readers. Students practice scoring sample writing pieces as they became familiar with their ideas rubric. We also listened to an author, Betsy Franco, share with us how she comes up with her ideas for writing! This week we will discuss the trait of organization and why it is important to write in a logical sequence.

Thank you to those families who participated in our school fundraiser!

New friends: This week in math, our students are learning how to apply the inverse relationship of subtraction to addition. They are talking with their teammates as we work through this strategy by sharing how adding/subtracting is a partnership. This is important for them to know as we review column addition and subtraction since this will support their accuracy.

Old friends: This week in math, our mathematicians will be learning how to add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators. As we discussed at Parent Night, it is extremely important for the students to know their multiplication facts in order to make this skill less difficult. We appreciate your support at home in helping your child master these facts!

As many of you saw (on Homeroom) and heard, last Friday, our team had the opportunity to dissect owl pellets. Although many of our friends were initially hesitant, their curiosity led them to become an active member searching for clues in their owl pellet. Each group used careful clues to determine the skeleton in their pellet. We will have our science assessment on food chains, habitats, and owls on Wednesday of this week.

Mark your Calendar!
