Peterson's News
11/6-11/10
I am so proud of the work our staff does to ensure that our students are successful and thriving!! Each year the state releases our school report card. The purpose of the report card is to “provide a snapshot of academic achievement; student and teacher information; and financial data at the state, district, and school levels." On the report card, each school receives a summative designation from the state. This year our designation was commendable. We continue to demonstrate high proficiency levels in ELA, Math, and Science. We also had a stronger rate of growth in math last year where our average growth percentile increased from 57 to 64. There are two areas that we will look to improve for next year. The first is our ELA growth. While we still have an above-average growth percentile of 52 and it is higher than the district and state averages, we want to dig into how we can increase it. We know the importance of small group work and differentiating our instruction and we will look more closely as a staff how we are incorporating these strategies, share our successes, and look to grow our understanding. We will also look at our School Improvement Plan and how it can be adjusted. The other area is Chronic Absentism. Unfortunately, we increased the number of students who have missed 18 or more days of school from last year. This equates to missing a day every other week. This is an area that we will need your support and help. Over the coming months, I will be putting information in our newsletter and sharing with the PTA about the importance of attendance and how we can work together to ensure that our students are here. Being present at school and growth go hand in hand. The discussions, collaboration, and deep thinking can’t be made up when students are gone.
Thank you for reading the newsletter each week!! There is a lot in this week's. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
Best,
Alli Landstrom

Parent Academies
This year, we would like to offer Parent Academies. The purpose of these academies is to help our parents gain a better of understanding of different topics or initiatives related to Peterson and the District.
Our first Parent Academy will be Assessments and How They’re Used. It will be on Monday, November 13th from 5:30-6:30 in the LMC. During this academy, we will share the assessments the district uses, timeline for assessments, and how those assessments as well as other pieces of evidence are used to determine placement in our Project Arrow and Math Acceleration programs. Please note, this academy will not be a time to discuss concerns or questions specific to your child. It is our hope that after attending the academy, you will have a better understanding of our Assessments and how they are used to ensure our students are achieving their highest potential.
Fitness Club
Thank you to all the Fitness Club members who participated this October! We had a great time learning about how to listen to our bodies, the difference between a walk, power walk, jog and a sprint and how to safely share the road. So proud of all of these runners! Keep up the great work team! Love, Coach Brolley
Garden Update and Special Guest!
We are excited to share that our school garden is officially on the school grounds! We would like to extend a special thanks to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, Eagle Scout Arda Akman, and his Troop volunteers for assembling our raised beds, creating arbor entrances, and more. The garden was assembled on Sunday, October 29th. Another special thank you to the school parents and teachers who volunteered to bring the soil to the school!
One of our goals with the school garden is to invite community leaders to visit the garden. Allowing our students to showcase their seedlings and share what the school garden means to them. Our first guest was Congresswoman Lauren Underwood, who visited our school on Tuesday, October 31st. Congresswoman Underwood visited 4th Grade Mrs. Grahn’s class, where she asked the students to tell her what they were working on, and what they had learned. The students also got to read out loud their garden journal entries. One of our Kindergarten classrooms engaged in a Q&A with the Congresswoman. Our 3M - Ms. Miner and 5D - Mrs. Decker’s Class got to come outside and share their experience with the seedlings as well. It was a great day for our students to know that the leaders in our community are excited to see what Peterson Elementary can do with a school garden!
Reminders
- We will again be enforcing our no hats policy with students. We had permitted hats due to some extenuating circumstances with other students and there is no longer a need for us to do this. In addition, students should be chewing gum with the exception of our 5th graders and their Bubblegum Friday Fundraiser.
- Picture Retakes are Thursday, November 9th. If your child missed the original picture day, you can order and pay online at http://shop.hrimaging.com. If your child is retaking his/her picture, please send previous picture package to school.
